Algonquin gym participating in 'Australia Day' fundraiser for bushfire relief efforts

An Algonquin gym is one of many across Illinois asking its customers to work out for charity: to aid the victims of the Australian bushfires.

Staff with Orangetheory Fitness studios of Illinois have organized a statewide Australia Day fundraising campaign Sunday for bushfire disaster relief programs. The company’s “Make It Rain for Australia” fundraiser includes charity workouts at several studio locations across Illinois – including the Algonquin gym at 1624 S.

Schaub has written three children's books and three poetry anthologies. She will be promoting her new book, "Dream Big, Little Scientists," on its release date, Feb. 18, at Anderson's Bookshop in Downers Grove.

 

Official: Naval base 'gate runner' was only a base worker

GREAT LAKES – A man who drove onto a naval station north of Chicago without showing credentials early Friday, leading to a lockdown and a warning for personnel to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT!,” turned out to be an employee who didn't follow directions, officials said.

The “gate runner” at Naval Station Great Lakes ended up being a worker who was authorized to enter the base but who “did not follow directions of the gate sentry," base spokesman John Sheppard said in a news release.

Fire crews rescue man from Minooka grain bin

Emergency crews rescued a man who was stuck in a grain bin Thursday in Minooka.

The man was in stable condition after he was extricated from the grain bin, officials said.

The Minooka Fire Protection District received a call about 12:45 p.m. Thursday about a man buried to his waist in a grain bin on West Mondamin Street, Elwood Fire Chief William Offerman said.

"He's out," Offerman said.

Psychological evaluation ordered for Woodstock man charged in Crystal Lake hammer attack

A judge on Thursday ordered a psychological evaluation for a Woodstock man accused of using a hammer to attack two women on a Crystal Lake bike trail in September.

Angel Reinaldo-Cardoza, 48, remained at the McHenry County Jail Thursday on multiple charges of attempted murder, armed violence and aggravated battery.

 

Jeep to film commercial on Saturday in Woodstock

Some road closures are expected around the historic Woodstock Square as Jeep will be filming a TV commercial there this weekend.

Jane Howie, executive assistant to the city manager and the mayor of Woodstock, said some roads might be closed, while others might just have limited access.

According to a notice from O Positive Films posted on the Woodstock Police Department’s Facebook page, the following streets will be posted as a “No Parking/Tow Zone” from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m.

WASHINGTON – Democratic House prosecutors argued in President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial Thursday that he was swept up by a “completely bogus” Ukraine theory pushed by attorney Rudy Giuliani that led to his abuse of presidential power and then impeachment.

As the Democrats pressed their case for a second day before skeptical Republican Senate jurors, they displayed video images of the nation’s top FBI and Homeland Security officials warning the public off the theory that it was Ukraine, not Russia, that interfered in the 2016 election.

 

Winning $1 million lottery ticket bought at Crystal Lake gas station

An Amoco gas station in Crystal Lake sold a $1 million winning lottery ticket, the Illinois Lottery said on Thursday.

The ticket was bought at the station at 339 W. Virginia St., located on Route 14 and McHenry Avenue. It matched all five numbers, 1-3-13-22-26, to win the jackpot during Wednesday evening’s drawing.

In a news release, the Illinois Lottery encouraged the winner to sign the back of the ticket and keep it in a safe place until he or she can visit one of the lottery’s five prize centers.
