Crystal Lake man pleads guilty to sex abuse, child pornography charges

A 24-year-old Crystal Lake man was sentenced to prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to possessing and soliciting child pornography.

Joshua G. Dancy accepted a plea offer from the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office and entered guilty pleas to soliciting child pornography, possessing child pornography, and multiple charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

 

MCC offering free tax prep help at 2 locations

McHenry County College is hosting sessions of free tax assistance and e-filing of federal and state tax returns through April 15 with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Clinic.

Walk-in hours are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in Room A102 at the college, located at 8900 U.S. Highway 14 in Crystal Lake. The clinic is closed on March 23, 25, and 28.

OSWIECIM, Poland – Survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp prayed and wept as they marked the 75th anniversary of its liberation, returning Monday to the place where they lost entire families and warning about the ominous growth of anti-Semitism and hatred in the world.

“We have with us the last living survivors, the last among those who saw the Holocaust with their own eyes,” Polish President Andrzej Duda told those at the commemoration, which included the German president as well as Jewish, Christian and Muslim leaders.

6 months later: Mounting frustration, violation in wake of Crystal Lake condo fire

Six months after the fire that destroyed his condominium at 540 Devonshire Lane in Crystal Lake, Chris Temple still lives with his parents in Richmond.

“It feels like I’m existing, but I’m not really living,” he recently told the Northwest Herald.

Temple isn’t alone. The 19 other unit owners from 540 Devonshire still are displaced, as well. For a variety of reasons, substantial restoration work hasn’t been conducted, and the building remains uninhabitable after the July 2019 fire.

 

GOP defends Trump as Bolton book adds pressure for witnesses

WASHINGTON – Senators faced mounting pressure Monday to summon John Bolton to testify at President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial even as Trump’s lawyers mostly brushed past extraordinary new allegations from the former national security adviser and focused instead on corruption in Ukraine and historical arguments for acquittal.

Outside the Senate chamber, Republicans grappled with claims in a forthcoming book from Bolton that Trump had wanted to withhold military aid from Ukraine until it helped with investigations into Democratic rival Joe Biden.

 

China counts 106 coronavirus deaths

BEIJING – China on Tuesday reported 25 more deaths from a new viral disease, raising the total to at least 106, as the U.S. government prepared to fly Americans out of the city at the center of the outbreak.

The total includes the first death in Beijing, the Chinese capital, on Monday and 24 new deaths in Hubei province, where illnesses from the newly identified coronavirus first surfaced in December, the government announced.

Chicago’s low-income communities receiving a $20M investment

CHICAGO – Underprivileged areas in Chicago will receive an estimated $20 million investment for revitalization efforts that prioritize affordable housing and economic development, Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced Monday.
