The Rotary Club of Lake in the Hills recently took a trip to Antigua, Guatemala, to help restore a school that had been severely damaged by the De Fuego volcano of 2018.

 

Crystal Lake to see roadway, stormwater solution projects in upcoming year

Road improvements and projects meant to alleviate flooding in the area are expected to begin this year, city employees announced at the Crystal Lake State of the Community Luncheon on Friday.

Crystal Lake Public Works Department Director Mike Magnuson said the city is looking at stormwater solution projects along the lake.

The Rotary Club of Lake in the Hills took a recent service trip to Antigua, Guatemala, to help restore a school that had been severely damaged by the De Fuego volcano of 2018. This trip was a group effort with six Rotary clubs including Huntley, Palatine, Chicago near south, Cary-Grove, and Arlington Heights.

 

Algonquin man pleads guilty to delivering cocaine in girlfriend's overdose death

A 59-year-old Algonquin man was sentenced to probation Friday after pleading guilty to delivering the cocaine police said killed his girlfriend.

Gregory B. Galluzzo, of the 100 block of Jefferson Street, will serve two years of probation in exchange for his guilty plea to a single count of delivery of a controlled substance. As a condition of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to dismiss additional and more serious charges, including drug-induced homicide.

 

Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47 reviews bus service in 4 areas

Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47 is reviewing four areas in the city to see whether continued bus service is necessary, causing some parents to worry that transportation option may be taken away.

The walking areas currently being reviewed by the district are the crossing over Swanson Road at Alexandra Boulevard for Woods Creek Elementary School, the crossing over Swanson Road at Village/Greenfield for Glacier Ridge Elementary, the Wedgewood area and the Barlina and St.

 

15 arrested in warrant sweep

Fifteen people were arrested Wednesday and Thursday as the result of a McHenry County Sheriff's Office felony arrest warrant sweep, according to a news release.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Apprehension Unit headed the effort, which led to the seizure of drugs, one firearm and multiple rounds of ammunition, according to a release the sheriff's department emailed Friday afternoon.

Early voting begins for the March 17 primary election

GENEVA – By midday Thursday, 41 people cast ballots for early primary voting at the Kane County Clerk’s offices in Geneva and Aurora.

And among them was Hector Velazquez, a deputy clerk.

Sporting a sticker proclaiming “I voted early,” Velazquez said he hoped people would step up and vote in the March 17 primary election.

“It’s our civic duty,” Velazquez said. “I would hope that people would go out (and vote).

 

Johnsburg High School Deca team receives medals at regional competition

The Johnsburg High School Deca team took home several medals at the North Suburban Regional Competition on Jan. 31 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont.

Deca is an international organization that hosts competitions for high school students in business-related areas. Categories include human resources, marketing, finance and several others. Students compete in role-playing scenarios where they take on the role of a professional in their category and pitch a solution to a scripted problem.

 

Anger, virus cases grow in China with 722 total deaths

BEIJING – The number of confirmed cases of the new virus has risen again in China while fatalities increased to 722 on Saturday, as the ruling Communist Party faced anger and recriminations from the public over the death of a doctor who was threatened by police after trying to sound the alarm about the disease over a month ago.

The government announced that another 3,399 people had been diagnosed over the last 24 hours, reversing two days of declines, and raising the total accumulated number of cases on the mainland to 34,546.
