FDA crackdown on vaping flavors has blind spot: disposables

WASHINGTON – The U.S. government began enforcing restrictions Thursday on flavored electronic cigarettes aimed at curbing underage vaping.

 

15 arrested in McHenry County warrant sweep

Fifteen people were arrested Wednesday and Thursday as the result of a McHenry County Sheriff’s Office felony arrest warrant sweep, according to a news release.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Unit headed the effort, which led to the seizure of drugs, one firearm and multiple rounds of ammunition, according to a release the sheriff’s department emailed Friday afternoon.

36-year-old McHenry man charged in fatal overdose

A McHenry man remained at the McHenry County Jail on Friday after police said he delivered the heroin-fentanyl combination that killed Jessica Hocin of McHenry.

Hocin was found dead June 1 at the McHenry home where she lived with 36-year-old Russell S. Levand, according to a criminal complaint filed with the McHenry County Circuit Clerk’s Office.

Harvard School District 50 is in search of workshop presenters and resource fair vendors to participate in its first "Parent University."

The event is designed to connect District 50 families with local community resources while promoting the active role parents and caregivers play in their child's education, according to a release from the district. The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 4 at Harvard High School, 1103 N.

 

Algonquin woman rescued from house fire dies

A woman rescued Thursday afternoon from a burning home in Algonquin has died, authorities said.

Crews from the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District responded to a house fire about 3 p.m. Thursday on Alice Lane.

Algonquin police Saturday confirmed they are investigating the death of the woman who lived there, 59-year-old Barbara Yerkes. A report from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office lists Yerkes as having died at 9:03 a.m.

 

U.S. Rep. Sean Casten discusses state of democracy at town hall in Algonquin

In the wake of the State of the Union address delivered by President Donald Trump last week, U.S. Rep. Sean Casten said he felt compelled to talk about the condition of our democracy at a town hall Saturday afternoon at the Ganek Municipal Center in Algonquin.

“I had an obligation to talk about some of the fiasco that was the State of the Union that became a reality television show for all in a Trump campaign rally,” Casten told the Northwest Herald. “It was just disgusting.

Judge strikes blow to U.S. immigration enforcement tactics

SAN DIEGO – A federal judge has prohibited U.S. immigration authorities from relying on databases deemed faulty to ask law enforcement agencies to hold people in custody, a setback for the Trump administration that threatens to hamper how it carries out arrests.

The ruling applies only to the Central District of California, where state law already sharply limits the extent to which state and local law enforcement agencies can honor requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
