Former Illinois congressman Walsh ends 2020 GOP bid against Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Illinois congressman Joe Walsh ended his Republican primary challenge to President Donald Trump on Friday, abandoning an effort that faced long odds and financial struggles from the start.

“I’m suspending my campaign, but our fight against the Cult of Trump is just getting started. I’m committed to doing everything I can to defeat Trump and his enablers this November.” Walsh said in a tweet.

He told CNN on Friday morning that the Republican party is "Trump's party ... it's not a party.

 

U.S. economy adds a strong 225K jobs; unemployment up to 3.6%

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hiring jumped last month as U.S. employers added a robust 225,000 jobs, bolstering an economy that faces threats from China’s viral outbreak, an ongoing trade war and struggles at Boeing.

The Labor Department also said Friday that a half-million people streamed into the job market in January, though not all of them found jobs.

 

Legislative watchdog: ‘The fox is guarding the hen house’

SPRINGFIELD – All three people who have held the position of legislative inspector general in Illinois told a joint ethics panel Thursday the office needs more independence to police the General Assembly and maintain the public’s confidence in the process.

Carol Pope, the current officeholder, and former Inspectors General Julie Porter and Tom Homer appeared before the Joint Commission on Ethics and Lobbying Reform, a group that is to make recommendations for governmental ethics reform in the state by the end of March.

 

Four men arrested in McHenry County for solicitation of sex

Four men were arrested for solicitation of sex during a recent human trafficking sting, the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office announced Friday.

Lawrence Allen of Algonquin, Jeffrey Fuka, also of Algonquin, Christopher Rios of Elgin and Mahirul Chowdhury of Arlington Heights were all arrested during the sting.

Lake in the Hills Police make one arrest, stop 13 vehicles during Super Bowl weekend

The Lake in the Hills Police stopped 13 vehicles for violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code and made one arrest during a Super Bowl weekend enforcement effort.

The effort ran from Jan. 31 through the early morning hours of Monday to keep impaired drivers off the roads and ensure seatbelt compliance, according to police.

Officers cited seven drivers for speeding violations and one uninsured motorist.

 

Chicago husband, wife sickened by coronavirus leave hospital

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago husband and wife who late last month became the first person-to-person coronavirus patients in the United States have been released from a suburban hospital, health officials said Friday.

In a statement, Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates said that they were “discharged to their home under the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Illinois Department of Public Health.” The hospital said the two, both in their 60s, are now in “home isolation.” The hospital did not say when the two were di

 

No injuries in Woodstock barn fire

There were no injuries reported from a barn fire late Thursday night in Woodstock.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded at 11:14 p.m. Thursday to the barn fire south of a home in the 13800 block of Pleasant Valley Road in unincorporated Woodstock.

Animals were evacuated from the barn before firefighters arrived and have all been accounted for.

 

Anti-fascist, conservative flyers linked to McHenry County College investigation

A Reddit thread, an anti-fascist flyer and a conservative student organization each are pieces of an ongoing McHenry County College and campus police investigation.

Officials are looking into allegations that a self-proclaimed "Antifa" activist removed flyers promoting a Turning Point USA event and instead hung posters that likened President Donald Trump supporters to Nazis.

Woman flown to hospital with 'life-threatening injuries' after Algonquin house fire

A woman was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a fire at her home Thursday afternoon.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District was dispatched for a structure fire at 55 Alice Lane in Algonquin at 3:02 p.m., according to Deputy Fire Chief John Knebl.

While on their way to the scene, fire dispatch told crews the house may still be occupied.

Fire crews arriving on the scene found a ranch home with heavy fire coming from the front of it.

 

Early voting starts slow in McHenry County

Early voting in McHenry County got off to a slow start on Monday with only one vote being cast inside the first hour of polls being open.

But by late afternoon, McHenry County Clerk and Recorder Joe Tirio said around 17 people casts their ballots, which was more than he had expected.

Tirio added it is not uncommon to have such a low turnout on the first day.
