Crystal Lake man charged after shooting man attempting to buy marijuana

A 22-year-old Crystal Lake man is facing an attempted murder charge after shooting a man who attempted to buy marijuana from him, the Kane County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday.

Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a Huntley-area hospital at around 6 p.m.

 

Committee presses for automatic voter registration answers

SPRINGFIELD — A programming error in Illinois’ automatic voter registration system that mistakenly enrolled more than 500 people was a “wakeup call,” the state’s top elections official said Wednesday.

One string of code among 8.5 million others controlling the “hundreds of functions” of the secretary of state’s office resulted in 574 people who identified themselves as non-U.S. citizens being registered to vote, the agency’s senior legal advisor, Nathan Maddox, said.

Of those people, 15 cast ballots.

 

13th Annual My Sister's Dress Sale to be held in March

The 13th Annual My Sister’s Dress sale will be held on Saturday, March 7 in an effort to make prom affordable to area high schoolers. The sale, organized by Panouly Moua, Development Coordinator at Home of the Sparrow, will be at the Sage YMCA in Crystal Lake from 9 a.m to noon. 

Over 1,000 new and like-new prom and formal dresses will be offered for only $25.

 

McHenry County committee votes to delay ending of mileage reimbursement

The McHenry County Administrative Services Committee voted Wednesday to delay the effective start date of a resolution seeking to eliminate mileage reimbursements for County Board members to attend regularly scheduled meetings.

But in light of recent allegations against McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks, one committee member suggested that matters such as these should be put on hold and the County Board instead should focus on state-mandated matters for the time being.

Governors warn Trump rule could lead to big Medicaid cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) — Governors of both major political parties are warning that a little-noticed regulation proposed by President Donald Trump's administration could lead to big cuts in Medicaid, reducing access to health care for low-income Americans.

The arcane fiscal accountability rule proposed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, would tighten federal oversight and approval over complex financing strategies states have long used to help pay for their share of the $600 billion program.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump unleashed his fury against those who tried to impeach him at a prayer breakfast Thursday, a day after his acquittal by the Senate.

“As everybody knows, my family, our great country and your president have been put through a terrible ordeal by some very dishonest and corrupt people," Trump said at the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington.

 

FBI director warns of ongoing Russian 'information warfare'

WASHINGTON – FBI Director Chris Wray said Wednesday that Russia is engaged in “information warfare” heading into the 2020 presidential election, though he said law enforcement has not seen ongoing efforts by Russia to target America's election infrastructure.

Wray told the House Judiciary Committee that Russia, just as it did in 2016, is relying on a covert social media campaign aimed at dividing American public opinion and sowing discord.
