A quiet day for area firefighters

Fire crews throughout Central Oregon responded Saturday to 32 reports of smoke, none of which amounted to much in the way of fire, according to the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center.“We had overnight reports of 32 smokes that we went to look for and seek out when the storm started (Friday) afternoon," said dispatch center spokesman Nick Mickel. “All of them, we couldn’t find them yet, or put them out.

Suzanne Gallagher has resigned as chairwoman of the Oregon Republican Party after only six months on the job.Gallagher announced her decision before she faced a recall vote at this weekend’s party convention at the Riverhouse Hotel & Convention Center in Bend.Party members accused Gallagher of mishandling finances and making inappropriate hiring decisions.

 

Around the state, rain complicates firefighting

The state was peppered with 10,000 lightning strikes Friday and Saturday, accompanied by some rain, but fire managers had yet to determine if it made much of an impact.“The precipitation did hamper some firefighting efforts.

Lightning keeps firefighters busy

Lightning Friday kept firefighters hopping across Central Oregon, the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center reported.Over a 12-hour period ending at 7 p. m., more than 350 lightning strikes were recorded across the area.
