Bulletin invites calendar items

With the fall high school sports season fast approaching, The Bulletin will be regularly listing preseason meeting and practice dates for area prep teams, as well as other important dates to remember, in a prep calendar that will appear regularly in the sports section’s Scoreboard.Athletic directors and coaches who wish to have information included in the calendar are encouraged to submit that information to The Bulletin at sports@bendbulletin.com.

Fire threatening John Day declared a conflagration

Gov. John Kitzhaber declared the Grouse Mountain fire, burning just outside the city of John Day, a conflagration late Thursday, according to the Oregon State Fire Marshal.Abut 75 buildings were threatened as the fire made a run toward the northern city limit due to an abrupt change in wind direction Wednesday.

Service planned for Hammack

A Tuesday service is planned for John Hammack, the firefighter who was killed late last month at a wildfire near Sisters.The service is set for 3 p. m. Tuesday at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center at 3800 S. W. Airport Way in Redmond, according to his family.

 

Air quality listed as ‘moderate’

With the increase in Central Oregon fires, the Oregon Health Authority Public Health Division and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued a warning to residents about the smoke conditions.The DEQ has Bend’s air quality listed as “moderate."People with chronic respiratory conditions, the elderly and children should avoid breathing smoke by closing windows and avoiding strenuous exercise outside, said Bruce Gutelius, an epidemiologist for the public health division.

 

Green Ridge Fire still growing

The Green Ridge Fire, near Camp Sherman, grew Thursday by 200 acres, according to the Central Oregon Incident Dispatch.The area currently has 581 firefighters assigned to the fire, which is 50 percent contained.

 

3-vehicle crash south of Madras

At least one person was transported via helicopter Thursday night in a three-vehicle crash 3 miles south of Madras.A pickup, motorcycle and car were involved in the crash, which occurred around 3:20 p. m., said Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman Rex Holloway. U. S.
