Madras fire destroys 2 homes

Fire destroyed two mobile homes in Madras and damaged two others.Everyone escaped Saturday’s fast-moving fire at the Tops Trailer Park. Witnesses said the neighboring homes were destroyed in less than three minutes.Incident Commander Mark Johnson says a woman and a baby had minor burns.

 

Fires have cost state $70M this year

MEDFORD — The Oregon Department of Forestry has spent more than $70 million fighting major wildfires so far this summer, far more than it generally spends to handle conflagrations on state-protected lands.The two largest wildfires in southern Oregon — the Big Windy and Douglas Complex fires — are responsible for nearly $60 million of that total.

 

Court voids verdict in case where pregnant woman was tortured

EUGENE — The Oregon Court of Appeals has tossed the conviction of a man found guilty of torturing his pregnant girlfriend at a Eugene motor home more than four years ago.The court ruled the guilty verdicts against Kevin Shannon Jones cannot stand because evidence of past crimes was improperly admitted and could have unfairly influenced the jury.

 

Youth smoking is down - but cigar use is up

BALTIMORE — At Everest Greenish Grocery, a brightly lit store on a faded corner of this city, nothing is more popular than a chocolate-flavored little cigar. Lawrence and Rachel (Goodrich) Baker, of Bend, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their family at Sons of Norway Hall in Bend from 2-6 p. m. on Sept. 14.The couple were married Sept. 14, 1963, at First Christian Church in Bend.

Fred and Judy (Jordan) Newton, of Bend, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception hosted by Tom Newton, Nancy Kelleher, Andy Jordan and Marcia Morgan in September in Bend.The couple were married Sept. 7, 1963, in Canoga Park, Calif.

 

Gould — Holsapple

Kaitlyn Gould and Ryan Holsapple, both of Thornton, Colo., plan to marry Sept. 1 at Aspen Lakes Golf Course in Sisters.The future bride is the daughter of John and Laurie Gould, of Bend. She is a 2007 graduate of Bend High School and a 2011 graduate of University of Northern Colorado, where she studied psychology.

 

Huck

Wilbur and Karen (Hanson) Huck, of Bend, will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a trip to the Oregon Coast with their poodle, Birdy.The couple were married Aug. 27, 1973, in Pocatello, Idaho.Mr. Huck was a professor emeritus at Idaho State University until his retirement in 1990. Mrs.

 

Sakurada — Moylan

Yayoi Sakurada and Myles Moylon, both of Klamath Falls, were married Feb. 21, 2012, in Japan and celebrated their nuptials on July 13 at a private residence in Bend.The bride is the daughter of Akira and Chizuko Sakurada, of Kanagawa, Japan.

 

Tenace — Fisher

Gina Tenace, of Redmond, and John Fisher III, of Dayville, were married May 18 at River Run Lodge at Eagle Crest in Redmond. A reception followed.The bride is the daughter of Gene and Linda Tenace, of Redmond. She is a 1994 graduate of Poway High School in Poway, Calif., and a 1998 graduate of University of California, Santa Barbara, where she studied communication.
