5 sentenced in Allen County courts

The following individuals were sentenced in Allen County Common Pleas Court:
BETTS
Treynton Betts, 19, of Cincinnati, was sentenced Tuesday by Judge Jeffrey Reed to three years of probation and a referral to the WORTH Center after pleading guilty to a second-degree felony charge of burglary. He was ordered to pay restitution to the victim in the amount of $1,676.

4 sentenced in Van Wert court

VAN WERT — Four individuals appeared Wednesday in Van Wert County Common Pleas Court in front of Judge Martin Burchfield.
Harley Maroney, 22, Van Wert, changed his plea to guilty to two counts of importuning, fourth-degree felonies, and one count of attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a fifth-degree felony. The court ordered a pre-sentence investigation and set sentencing for Oct. 25.

Filmmaker Murray Lerner, who shot Dylan going electric, dies

NEW YORK (AP) — Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Murray Lerner, who captured Bob Dylan going electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival and preserved legendary music acts like Jimi Hendrix and Leonard Cohen forever on film, has died, said his son, Noah. He was 90.
Lerner died Sunday in New York City, his son said.

 

Cousin who saw Emmett Till being kidnapped dies at age 74

CHICAGO (AP) — Simeon Wright, who was with his cousin Emmett Till when the Chicago boy was kidnapped in 1955 after whistling at a white woman in Mississippi, has died. He was 74.
Till, who was 14, spent the summer of 1955 visiting relatives in Mississippi and was kidnapped, tortured and killed after whistling at a white woman working at a store in the rural hamlet of Money. His death galvanized the civil rights movement when his mother, Mamie Till Mobley, insisted on an open-casket funeral in Chicago to show the world her son’s mutilated body.

 

Catholics, Lutherans to commemorate 500 years of Reformation

LIMA — Tradition has it that it all started on Oct. 31, 1517. A German cleric named Martin Luther tacked a list of 95 theses to the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg. These theses declared in essence that faith in Jesus Christ alone was the key to eternal salvation. The Catholic Church, with its emphasis on the infallible papacy, veneration of the Virgin Mary, and the “selling” of indulgences, Luther believed, was an edifice built on shaky theological ground.
