Remnants of Harvey still powerful enough to threaten floods

HOUSTON (AP) — A week after it slammed into Texas, Harvey retained enough rain-making power Friday to raise the risk of flooding as far north as Indiana. In Houston, officials tried to safeguard parts of their devastated city by intentionally flooding others.
The mayor announced plans to release water from two reservoirs that could keep as many as 20,000 homes flooded for up to 15 days.
In another Texas city with no drinking water, people waited in a line that stretched for more than a mile to get bottled water while others awaited evacuation flights.

 

Gas prices surge higher as drivers rush to fill their tanks

ATLANTA (AP) — Gasoline prices rose several cents overnight amid continuing fears of shortages in Texas and other states in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey’s strike on the Gulf Coast.
The national average for a gallon of regular gas rose in one day from $2.45 Thursday to $2.52 Friday, the American Automobile Association reported .
At least two major pipelines — one that ships gasoline across the southern United States and to New York, and another that flows north to Chicago — have been slowed or stopped because of flooding and damage.

BOTKINS — Actor Kirk Cameron is bringing a marriage event to Only Believe Ministries, helping people to discover that marriage is worth fighting for.
Cameron won a lot of fame portraying Mike Seaver on “Growing Pains.” It was while acting on the sitcom that he met his wife, actress Chelsea Noble. Noble played Seaver’s girlfriend on the series. They actually got married while they were working on the show. Cameron was only 20 years old at the time he was married.

 

Grab a mattress: Businesses become storm shelters in Texas

HOUSTON (AP) — Of all the places that have been turned into shelters for Hurricane Harvey victims — a megachurch, a ballpark, a gas station, a bowling alley, among them — the one with the most comfortable sleeping arrangements surely must be the Gallery Furniture showroom.
Owner Jim McIngvale, better known as Mattress Mack, threw open a couple of his stores to anyone in need, offering food, clean bathrooms and, of course, luxury bedding.

 

Harvey aid package likely vehicle for debt ceiling increase

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House plans to ask Congress Friday for a $5.9 billion down payment for initial Harvey recovery efforts. Republican leaders are already making plans to use the aid package, certain to be overwhelmingly popular, to win speedy approval of a contentious increase in the federal borrowing limit.

5 hurt in Hardin Co. multi-car crash Friday

KENTON — Deputies with the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office on Friday were investigating a multiple-vehicle crash that occurred shortly after 8 a.m. in Goshen Township that left five juveniles injured, three of them seriously.

 

Allen Co. siren tests set for Wednesday

LIMA — Warning sirens throughout Allen County will be tested at noon Wednesday, according to Tom Berger, director of the Allen County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
The sirens are tested on the first Wednesday of each month. In the event of an emergency, the sirens are an indication that persons in the affected area should go indoors and tune to local news media for additional information and instructions of emergency actions to be taken, Berger said.

 

Van Wert Sheriff touts Offender Watch Program

VAN WERT — Van Wert County Sheriff Thomas M. Riggenbach has announced that during this year’s Van Wert County Fair his office will be assisting citizens register to receive an automatic email alert when a registered sex offender moves into an area near their home.
