City Council pushes for divestment from private prisons

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati City Council members are asking the city’s pension board to divest from companies that operate or do business with private prisons.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld drew support from a majority of council members after proposing the policy this week.
Sittenfeld says his research shows the city’s pension system has invested $2.5 million in a British security company that operates private prisons worldwide. He says additional money has been invested in two companies connected to private prisons.

 

Joan and LaRee Little

LIMA — Mr. and Mrs. LaRee Little are celebrating 55 years of marriage. A trip to their honeymoon location, The Golden Lamb, Lebanon, Ohio, is planned.
Little and the former Joan Bricker were married Sept. 2, 1962, at St. John United Methodist Church, Columbus Grove.
They are the parents of four children, Shelly Alonzo, Scott (Jennifer) Little, Clark (Pamela) Little and Brice (Julie) Little. They have 11 grandchildren.

 

Judy and Bud Poling

LIMA — Mr. and Mrs. Bud Poling are celebrating 50 years of marriage. A family dinner will be held.
Poling and the former Judy Hollenbacher were married Aug. 25, 1967, at Central Christian Church, Lima, by the Rev. Normal Hagley.
They are the parents of two children, Dan (Tracey) Poling, of Lima, and Betsy Poling, of Goshen, Indiana. They have three grandchildren.
Poling is retired from BP Chemical. His wife is retired from United Way of Greater Lima. She works part time at Alloway Environmental Testing.

 

Judy and Roger Schick

LIMA — Mr. and Mrs. Roger Schick, of Parrish, Florida, are celebrating 50 years of marriage with an open house and dance party featuring the Al Best Band from 2-5 p.m. Sept. 10 at Springbrook Gardens, Lima. Please omit gifts.
Schick and the former Judy Hardesty were married Sept. 2, 1967, at Westminster Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Davis.
They are the parents of two children, Joseph (Deborah) Schick, of Wapakoneta, and Rebecca (Ian) Fontaine, of Pataskala. They have four grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

 

Real Life Mama: A mother’s hands

Sometimes, I look down at my hands and I swear I see my mom’s hands. Isn’t it crazy how genetics work? We will often compare our hands — the same crooked pinky fingers and all. Here lately, she talks about how thin her skin on her hands seems to have gotten or how she never had these “age spots” before. She doesn’t seem to see her hands they way I do.
To me, those hands hold the most true form of beauty and love.

 

The winners: The Lima News’ 21st annual Amateur Photo Competition

LIMA — The Lima News 21st annual Amateur Photo Competition winners are announced.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been 21 years, and photos just keep getting better,” said Craig J. Orosz, photo editor for The Lima News. “We were down 53 entries this year, but we had some fantastic photographs. Staff members from the Toledo Blade judged this year and were amazed by the outstanding images. The Blade staff did a lot of bantering back and forth, and after all of that, the best of the best emerged.”

 

Hardin County Fair fun for all

KENTON — The 153rd Hardin County Fair begins Tuesday and runs through Sept. 10 at the fairgrounds located at 14134 county Road 140. Daily gate admission is $8 or a season pass for $20, which gets one adult and all school-age children in for the week. Ride wristbands are $12 per day, with at least 15 rides on the grounds.
The Hardin County Fair saw attendance at 54,000 last year.

 

Cost questions abound on Ohio drug price relief measure

COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohioans have pushed a mandate onto this fall’s ballot that aims to rein in the skyrocketing costs of prescription drugs. But determining the exact savings it would bring is no easy task.
On paper, Issue 2 sounds simple. The citizen-initiated statute would bar state entities from buying drugs at prices higher than those paid by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which receives deep discounts.

 

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor dies of cancer at 85

LONDON (AP) — Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, the former Roman Catholic archbishop of Westminster in England, died Friday after a battle with cancer. He was 85.
The current archbishop, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, said Murphy-O’Connor died “peacefully” surrounded by his family and friends. He had asked people to pray for Murphy-O’Connor in August because of worsening health problems.

 

Legislative Update: Latta talks opioids with pharmacists, law enforcement

ADA — The opioid crisis gripping Ohio was the topic of conversation during an area legislator’s recent visit.
U.S. House of Representatives
Rep. Bob Latta, R-Bowling Green: On Tuesday, Latta visited Ohio Northern University to discuss the opioid epidemic with pharmacists from Hardin and Wyandot counties and professors in the ONU College of Pharmacy. The roundtable discussion focused on the perspective of local pharmacists on the issue as well as what can be done to help prevent addiction.
