Newtown changes middle and high school start times

The elementary school times have not changed, but Reed Intermediate School will now be combined with the elementary school routes. Reed Intermediate School students will be shuttled to the elementary school in their district in the afternoon to transfer to their neighborhood school bus to go home.

 

Lost dock found floating in Lake Waramaug

A dock was recently found floating freely in Lake Waramaug and is being held by the Washington Parks and Recreation Department until the owner reclaims it. The Lake Waramaug Association alerted residents to the missing dock in an email this week. The dock was found about two weeks, according to the email. “Do you know of anyone who lost a dock? Do you have a neighbor who has been away and may not realize that their dock is missing?” the email states. Three burglary suspects nabbed after crash on I-84

Southbury police spotted a vehicle matching that description on Route 172 and began following the car to where other Southbury police and State Police were waiting. “The suspect vehicle accelerated to a very high rate of speed in an attempt to elude officers,” according to the arrest report.

 

Newtown man arrested on sex assault charges

NEWTOWN - A man who authorities say is facing a number of sexual assault charges for having sexual contact with several young victims turned himself in to police this week.

Richard Saunders, of Huntington Road, is facing four counts each of fourth-degree sexual assault, risk of injury to a minor and impairing the morals of a child in connection to several incidents of sexual contact with young children, police said.

 

Ridgefield traffic jam caused by fallen tree

RIDGEFIELD - Motorists are being advised to find alternative routes after a fallen tree and burning electrical wires have forced emergency workers to close North Salem Road.

Traffic in the area is reported to be extremely heavy as a result of the road closure and the nearby closure of North Street previously scheduled for construction work.

 

Danbury plane crash victim remains in critical condition

Several witnesses called police to report the crash, including one woman who told authorities she believed that it was a Cessna aircraft and people from her office were running to the scene to assist the injured. A Skyhawk, according to Cessna’s website is ideally suited as a training aircraft due to its “forgiving flight characteristics” and clear visibility. “It may have been a pilot error or a mechanical problem, but it’s still too early to determine,” Deputy Fire Chief Stephen Williams said.

 

Plane crashes near Danbury Airport Sunday morning

DANBURY — Multiple people are injured after a plane crashed about a mile from Danbury Airport Sunday morning, police confirmed.

Danbury police are arriving at Miry Brook Road near the Dog Park where the plane crashed around 10:30 a.m., Lt. Mike Sturdevant said.

Mayor Mark Boughton said on Twitter that three people were injured and taken to Danbury Hospital. He said the crash occurred when the plane was taking off from Danbury Airport.

NEW MILFORD — The four Finkle siblings, all in their 60s, have lived in a ranch house surrounded by placid woods for nearly two decades — the last home on Sandy Acres Lane, where the only sound likely to break the silence is a barking dog. But on a summer night in June, their two TVs tuned to the nightly news, the balmy evening’s calm broke with the sound of shattered glass. “After all of it, blood was all over the kitchen like a pig was slaughtered,” JoAnne Finkle recalled last week. “All of it” began when JoAnne heard sounds coming from the woods.

 

Police: Fallen tree, power lines causes Main Street road closures, outages

DANBURY— A fallen tree and power lines have temporarily closed a portion of Main Street as authorities clear the area.

The tree fell Saturday around 2:30 p.m. on Main Street just north of North Street, bringing power lines down with it, police said. The police department, fire department and Eversource officials were still clearing the scene around 4 p.m.

Blockades were set up to redirect traffic near North Street and Tooley Lane, police said.

 

Ridgefield school start times committee finalized

RIDGEFIELD—The school board has finalized a thirty-two member committee to oversee changing school start times for the 2018-19 school year.

In May, the district hired the organization EdAdvance and decided to create a School Start Times Steering Committee to oversee the project, which the board will vote on in October. The new committee includes Superintendent Karen Baldwin, four Board of Education members, parents, school staff, representatives from the parks and recreation and police departments, a high school student and other members of the district.
