Gus Malzahn took a hard look at the program’s direction following a 6-7 record in UCF’s first season in the Big 12. He retooled the strength and conditioning program and hired two new coordinators, Ted Roof (defensive) and Tim Harris Jr. (offense). He also relied heavily on the transfer portal to rebuild a roster suitable for competing in the conference. Now, eight games into the season and facing the likelihood of another sub-.500 record, Malzahn made more changes. Roof was fired Monday after the Knights’ defense gave up at least 30 points for the fourth time.
