Weight-loss firm makes apparent Stamford exit

STAMFORD — A Connecticut weight-loss business appears to be slimming down its brick-and-mortar operations. A for-lease sign has been posted in the front window of the 1,000-square-foot Slim Nation center at 1012 Hope St., an establishment that opened last December. The Stamford space hosted one-on-one consultations and group sessions. Its apparent departure represents one of several recent changes to the commercial corridor of the city’s Springdale section.

 

Westhill principal meets parents at Stamford nonprofit

STAMFORD — Michael Rinaldi has a useful skill for a school administrator in a diverse city — he speaks fluent Spanish.

Rinaldi put that skill to use this week at Building One Community, the Stamford nonprofit that provides resources to immigrants, where he introduced himself as Westhill High School’s new principal and took questions from parents ahead of the school year beginning Aug. 31.

Rinaldi, the former assistant principal at Rippowam Middle School, assumed the role at Westhill last month.

 

Police: Violent domestic dispute, DUI put Stamford kid at risk

STAMFORD - The boyfriend of a Stamford woman has been was arrested after allegedly striking, pushing, strangulating and threatening to kill his girlfriend by grabbing a knife. This all took place in the presence of the 10-year-old child, according to Stamford police.

The incident happened on Saturday when police responded to a domestic incident on the east side of town where the suspect - identified as David Perez - was intoxicated and getting ready to flee in his vehicle.

 

Police ID pedestrian killed on High Ridge Road

STAMFORD — Police have released the identity of a pedestrian struck and killed late Thursday night on High Ridge Road.

Sanh Truong, 89, of Square Acre Drive in Stamford, was not in the crosswalk when he was hit by a 2008 Toyota Prius while crossing from west to east near the Burger King restaurant and the intersection of High Ridge and Olga Drive, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the Toyota’s driver is a 65-year-old Stamford resident who stayed at the collision scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

 

Man gets 15 years for Norwalk home invasion

STAMFORD-A Bridgeport man was sentenced to 15 years in jail for breaking into his Norwalk girlfriend’s home and severely beating the woman and breaking several bones in her face.

Five weeks after a Stamford jury found Nector Marrero guilty of the December 2015 home invasion, burglary and second-degree assault, he was sentenced by Judge Gary White at the Stamford courthouse late Friday morning.

“What I see is a violent individual who has shown no remorse for his viscous and terrible assault on the victim,” White said.

 

Stamford police seek ID in pedestrian’s death

STAMFORD - A pedestrian was struck and killed on High Ridge Road late Thursday night and police are asking for the public’s help to identify the victim.

Just before 11:30 a.m. the pedestrian was crossing High Ridge Road, from west to east, near the Burger King restaurant. A 2008 Toyota Prius traveling northbound struck the pedestrian, who was not within a crosswalk.

The man suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The pedestrian was not carrying any identification and Stamford police are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the victim.

 

Unlucky crack dealer arrested again in Stamford

STAMFORD-A city man arrested six years ago for dropping more than 40 bags of crack cocaine in a bank, was arrested again in Stamford, this time for allegedly selling crack to an undercover officer in Stamford.

Capt. Richard Conklin said police have been on the lookout for Terrence Mapp, 42, of William Street for some time after he was caught selling drugs to the undercover earlier this year.

On Tuesday, police were told that Mapp was on a train to Stamford and officers set up at the Stamford train station and took him into custody at approximately 11 a.m.

 

Robbery defendant picked up with big gun in Stamford

STAMFORD-Police raided the home of an East Side man out on bond for an armed robbery and seized a large caliber pistol that he was not allowed to have.

Police on Wednesday charged Caleb Newell, 22, of Williams Street with criminal possession of a firearm and was released after he posted a $50,000 court appearance bond.

Capt. Richard Conklin said officers in the Narcotics and Organized Crime squad received word on the street that Newell was operating a gun stash house by allowing friends to keep their weapons in his William Street home.

 

Former Stamford personal injury attorney John Evans disbarred

STAMFORD-A suspended personal injury attorney with a long history of disciplinary problems has been disbarred by a Stamford judge for at least five years.

In a decision handed down earlier this week, Judge Charles Lee told former Stamford attorney John Evans, 61, that he had a persistent disregard for the rules that regulate his conduct and despite his being suspended he continued to practice law.

 

Bronx men charged with cell phone larceny in Stamford

STAMFORD-Two Bronx men were charged with trying to purchase two expensive cell phones by charging them to an account they had no right using, police said.

Sgt. Simon Blanc said police were called to the Sprint Store in the Bulls Head Shopping Center at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on the report of someone impersonating an account holder while trying to purchase two cell phones.

Police arrived at the store and talked to the assistant manager who said the man, later identified as Ruben Santana-Polanco, 36, tried to purchase two iPhone 7 Plus phones, each worth $870.
