National Trails Day event to celebrate Lake Orion Paint Creek Trail extension

The Paint Creek Trailways Commission and Lake Orion Downtown Development Authority will host the 20th annual National Trails Day event on June 2. The event will be held at the Orion Art Center, Children's Park and on the Paint Creek Trail in downtown Lake Orion. The year's theme is "National Trails Day on the Paint Creek Trail-celebrating the extension of the Paint Creek Trail and dedicating a new Iron Belle Trailhead at Children's Park in the Village of Lake Orion.

Two Oakland County brothers are bound over for trial for allegedly carrying out a years-long home invasion spree targeting Asian business owners, while a third man tied to the case has had one charge dismissed and has an upcoming hearing to address others.Alban Mustafa, 33 of Wixom, and Andi Mustafa, 31 of Novi, are facing several felony charges, including conducting a criminal enterprise, conspiracy to commit home invasion, multiple counts of first-degree and second-degree home invasion and receiving/concealing stolen property.

A Pontiac woman with an extensive criminal history, including a prostitution-related crime and assault, has been charged in the May 11 murder of William Spencer Bell, who she identified as her boyfriend.Marita Glynise Talley, 35, was arraigned Tuesday morning in front of Judge Preston Thomas of Pontiac's 50th district court, denied bond and returned to the Oakland County Jail.

Dr. Betty Chu named president of the Michigan State Medical Society

Betty A. Chu, M.D. chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, was appointed president of the Michigan State Medical Society, for a one-year term. The professional organization has a membership of more than 15,000 Michigan physicians.

 

Oakland, Macomb students win scholarships from Community Choice Credit Union

Twelve high school students from Oakland and Macomb counties are among 20 winners of $5,000 scholarships from Community Choice Credit Union. They were selected from more than 360 applicants to receive the scholarships to attend the Michigan college or university of their choice.Established in 2009, the Community Choice Foundation Scholarship Program has helped support 180 graduating high school seniors achieve their academic goals.

A program that turns vacant properties in Pontiac into community gardens has been named one of the best in the nation for community and economic development by the National Association of Counties. Growing Pontiac, developed by the Oakland County Treasurer's Office, was started in 2015 as a way to utilize tax foreclosed properties that would otherwise sit vacant.

 

Arraignment expected today for Pontiac woman arrested in fatal shooting of boyfriend

Arraignment is expected today for the 34-year-old Pontiac woman who reportedly called police after fatally shooting her boyfriend May 11.Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe said Monday that a warrant was issued by the Prosecutor's Office and that the woman will be formally charged Tuesday with murder and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
