Waterford holds annual Memorial Day parade

Veterans and the sacrifices so many have made were honored Monday in Waterford wth its Memorial Day Parade. Crowds gathered along Dixie Highway for the 10 a.m. Heart of the Lakes parade, which was sponsored by the VFW Post 1008. The parade moved fromo Sashabaw to Williams Lake Road and ended with a special ceremony at the Drayton Plains Cemetery.

 

Teenager drowns in Oxford Township

A 16-year-old boy drowned Sunday evening in Clear Lake in Oxford Township. He had been swimming with friends shortly after 7 p.m. when he went under water. The Oakland County Sheriff's dive team was summoned and assisted with the search for the young man. A

 

Sentencing Tuesday for Holly man who set wife on fire

A Holly man will be sentenced May 29 for setting his wife on fire during an argument.David John Garnett, Jr., 55, pleaded no contest May 1 for one count of assault with intent to murder and one count of arson.

 

Oakland County Road Commission and bar association partner to support troops

The Road Commission for Oakland County and the Oakland County Bar Association are once again teaming up to support troops serving overseas.As part of an annual campaign known as "Americans Thank Our Troops", items are collected and purchased by the road commission and bar association, loaded into trucks and delivered to troops.

Pontiac mother facing charges for intentionally scalding 1-year-old son

A Pontiac woman is facing child abuse charges after admitting to intentionally scalding her 1-year-old son in a bathtub because she was "frustrated with the child," the Oakland County Sheriff's Office announced Friday.On May 19, the day of the incident, Carmen Ann Smith-Portee first told investigators that she had run a bath for her son while he was in a separate room, and that he climbed into the scalding bath water himself while she had stepped away to gather cleaning supplies.

 

New 'restorative practies' laws aim to reduce school expulsions, suspensions

Only one student has been expelled at Clarkston High School this year.That compares to about 10 last year, which was a typical number for the last several years.Principal Gary Kaul attributes the sharp drop in expulsions to a package of new state laws that require school districts to consider "restorative practices" rather than automatically suspending or expelling students with disciplinary issues, with the only exception being if a student brings a firearm to school.
