New 'restorative practies' laws aim to reduce school expulsions, suspensions

Only one student has been expelled at Clarkston High School this year. That compares to about 10 last year, which was a typical number for the last several years.Principal Gary Kaul attributes the sharp drop in expulsions to a package of new state laws that require school districts to consider "restorative practices" rather than automatically suspending or expelling students with disciplinary issues, with the only exception being if a student brings a firearm to school.
