A free event open to the public in Pontiac on Sunday offers food, music, activities for kids and much more - with the goal of improving the community by focusing on fathers' involvement with families.The second annual Park Empowerment Day, presented by Daddys That Care, runs 2-6 p.m. at Hawthorne Park.

A Rochester Hills building contractor got slapped with a potentially lengthy prison sentence this week for not completing projects he was paid for and conspiring to fraudulently collect money from a locally-owned bank.John Houston Floyd has been ordered to spend up to 21 years in prison on multiple felony charges, sentenced as a habitual offender May 21 by Oakland County Circuit Judge Hala Jarbou.

Rochester's Junk in the Trunk resale event to return June 23

Registration ends June 1 for downtown Rochester's community resale event, Junk in the Trunk. The event, set to take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 23, will feature furniture, antiques, collectibles, dishes and glassware, accessories and handmade crafts. Downtown businesses, Rochester area residents and those who sell handmade crafts are welcome to sign up to sell at Junk in the Trunk.

 

Police looking for chainsaw thief

Bloomfield Township police hope to identify a man who reportedly stole a chainsaw from the Lowe's store at 1801 S. Telegraph Rd. on April 27. A cashier told police she said the man approach the exit doors with a 16-inch Husqvarna, valued at $269.99, and asked him if he needed assistance. He said no and then left the store with the item, which he hadn't paid for.

 

Oakland County names chief information security officer

Bridget Kravchenko has been named Oakland County's chief information security officer. Kravchenko takes over for Chris Burrows, who served with the county from 2013 until February 2018 when he stepped down to serve as senior vice president of security solutions for CBI Cyber Security Solutions based in Ferndale.

 

Troy firefighters free woman trapped in van after crash

The Troy Fire Department recently freed a woman who was trapped in her vehicle after it crashed into parked cars at the Troy Motor Mall.The woman's van had left the roadway at about 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, and landed in the parking lot of the motor mall, on Maple Road at Maplelawn. She was alone in the vehicle.

 

Senior inspires Pontiac youth to find confidence, winning 2018 Governor's Service Award

When 68-year-old Doris McCutcheon's daughter died in 2012, it was the Foster Grandparent Program at Herrington Elementary School in Pontiac that she says helped her keep her life on track. A resident of Auburn Hills and working in social services all her life, McCutcheon was recently honored with the 2018 Governor's Service Award in the senior volunteer category for her work with at-risk youth.

 

Last of 3 defendants in home invasion spree bound over to circuit court

The third of three suspects charged with a years-long home invasion spree targeting Asian business owners has been bound over to Oakland County Circuit Court.
