Multiple fire departments battle restaurant fire in Madison Heights

Northbound traffic was closed on Stephenson Highway at 12 Mile Road as firefighters battled a blaze at a Madison Heights restaurant Tuesday.Madison Heights firefighters were aided by departments in Ferndale, Hazel Park and Royal Oak after the fire started at Col's Family Restaurant, 29022 Stephenson.

 

Few details can be released on motorist's suicide in Troy

Troy police are not releasing the name or other personal or criminal information on a man who they say committed suicide as an officer approached his car during a traffic stop early Sunday, July 8.Sgt. Meghan Lehman said in an email that department policy "essentially prohibits us from releasing any information about suicides, unless there was a public safety issue like there was here with the freeway being closed.

Ferndale police use Taser on suspect, who falls 15 feet onto 8 Mile Road

A home invasion suspect Ferndale police say fled from officers was injured Tuesday after an officer stunned him with a Taser and he fell 15 feet from the Eight Mile service drive just west of Woodward onto the underpass of Eight Mile Road below.Ferndale police Sgt. Baron Brown said in a statement the suspect, 44, of Sterling Heights was taken to the hospital.

 

Arthur Frasca appointed as new trustee in Waterford Township

Arthur Frasca has been appointed as the newest member of the Waterford Township Board of Trustees. He fills the vacancy left by Michael Healy, who stepped down from his position in May due to moving his residence outside the township. Frasca will serve the remainder of Healy's unexpired term until November 2020.

 

St. Croix Shop leaves the mall for Birmingham street address

The local St. Croix Shop, an Italian menswear boutique, now has its own address. After 24 years at the Somerset Collection mall in Troy, the shop has been moved to 268 W. Maple Road in Birmingham. Hands-on learning at Detroit Zoo for World Snake Day

Visitors at the Detroit Zoo next week can learn about snake conservation with zookeeper talks and hands-on learning activities during a World Snake Day celebration.The event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the zoo's Holden Reptile Conservation Center.Zoo officials said guests can take part in conservation activities and learn how to identify snake sub-species by their appearance.

Owner of two Royal Oak restaurants "shocked" by claim he is closing because of parking

The owner of two downtown Royal Oak restaurants said he has no idea why a group of city business owners and others opposing the city's $58 million Civic Center project put out a news release saying he was being forced out of business by a lack of parking."I'm kind of shocked by this whole thing," said Brian Kramer, who owns Cantina Diablo and Red Fox English Pub on Main Street at 11 Mile Road.

 

Pontiac post office shot up

Someone shot up the United States Post Office building in Pontiac on Monday evening while two customers and postal workers were inside.Oakland County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of shots fired shortly after 6 p.m. in the 700 block of W. Huron Street to find two windows blown out at of the post office.
