Congressman Mike Bishop visited Clarkston High School on Friday, May 25 to honor senior Sage Paris with the Congressional Medal of Merit for Outstanding Youth Leadership. The Congressional Medal of Merit is the United States Congress' award for young Americans aged 14 to 23.

Oakland County man memorializes father in documentary about Alzheimer's

The premiere of Keith Famie's Visionalist Entertainment Productions new Public Television Documentary "On the Front Lines of Alzheimer's and Dementia," emceed by Joanne Purtan, is at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the Royal Oak Music Theater, 318 W. Fourth St. The film features heartfelt stories and leading professionals from around the world sharing the work they are doing to better understand a pathway to help those diagnosed with multiple forms of dementia and the people who care for them.

 

Walled Lake students awarded almost $100K in scholarships

The Legacy Scholarship Funds, Inc. presented 116 scholarships, totaling $99,197, to students of Walled Lake Schools. Three of those winners are Sophia Colvin, Walled Lake Central High School senior (from left); Faith Fredricks, Walled Lake Northern High School senior; and Joey George, Walled Lake Western High School senior.

 

Troy middle schoolers mentor younger students

For the second time this year, a group of student leaders from Smith Middle School took time out after their school day to visit with elementary students at a Troy Youth Assistance Youth Involvement Party. They gathered in the gymnasium at Troy Union Elementary School and set up board games and activities designed to engage the students.

 

Rochester teen wins full-ride scholarship to Oakland University

Marie Numan, who is graduating from Rochester High School, is this year's recipient of the Huntington Ford Scholarship, a full-tuition award sponsored by dealership owners Pat and Christie Scoggin. Numan's kind and caring personality is evident in her volunteer work at Beaumont Hospital in Troy and in her co-op job at a dental office in Rochester.

 

Oakland Press readers help cat make full recovery

Penelope, a tortoiseshell cat, was featured a few months ago in The Oakland Press after being rescued. At the time, she was in very poor condition, suffering from malnutrition and dehydration.

 

Dogs are invited to this Rochester Hills cocktail party

Supporters of the Michigan Animal Rescue League, along with their dogs, will mix and mingle at the ninth annual Yappy Hour fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. June 7 at the Meadow Brook Hall Rock Garden, 350 Estate Drive, Rochester Hills. "Yappy Hour is the only cocktail party in southeast Michigan where your dog is welcome," said Magee Humes, executive director of Michigan Animal Rescue League.

 

Two Oakland County residents honored at Detroit's Women in Blue Ceremony

The Detroit Public Safety Foundation honored two Detroit Police first-responders from Oakland County at this year's Women in Blue award ceremony.Detective Danielle Harrison of Southfield and Lt. Sonia Russell of West Bloomfield were two of 15 finalists for the Women in Blue Officer of the Year.
