The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 44 in Daytona Beach will offer a two-night basic boating class from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 27 and 28 at its building, 355 Basin St., in the Halifax Harbor Marina. The class will be taught by certified Coast Guard Auxiliary instructors who will instruct on boating safety, rules of the road, basic navigation, anchoring, docking, fueling, trailering, and required federal and state safety equipment and common emergencies. An inspiring flight to Pluto

Monday marked the 46th anniversary of humanity’s greatest achievement. But it was images last week from a much more distant land that reminded us how exciting space exploration can be.The appropriately named New Horizons unmanned probe sent back startling pictures of Pluto, once designated the solar system’s outermost planet before being downgraded to dwarf planet status in 2006 — the same year the New Horizons mission launched from Cape Canaveral. The view of Pluto from 3 billion miles away with even the best telescopes was fuzzy, depicting a yellowish blob.

A July 11 letter writes of “schools' main purpose” being the education of students. It's a sound observation, difficult to argue against.
However, the letter dismisses the importance of maintenance workers (and perhaps other non-teachers in the school system) as not being “integral to our children's education.” He says that farming out these services “will eventually get sorted out,” noting $6 million being freed up to (theoretically) be applied to educating.

Hospital workers fill hearts at Interfaith Kitchen

DELAND – Florida Hospital Fish Memorial employees and their families recently volunteered their time and served a lasagna dinner to community members in need at the Interfaith Kitchen at First United Methodist Church, 115 E. Howry Ave.The Interfaith Kitchen feeds the homeless and struggling individuals and families in West Volusia County. This is one of the largest continuously operating feeding programs of its kind in the region, serving about 100 meals six nights a week.
