State legislature to hold special session to redraw congressional districts

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Legislature will hold a nearly two-week special session in August to draw up new congressional districts.House Speaker Steve Crisafulli and Senate President Andy Gardiner announced Monday that the special session will last from Aug. 10 until Aug. 21.The state Supreme Court earlier this month threw out the state's existing districts.

New Smyrna Beach school receives state honor

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -Read-Pattillo Elementary School received the Family and Community Involvement award from Florida Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart and Florida Parent Teacher Association President Mindy Haas last week during the Florida PTA convention in Tampa. The award recognizes family and community involvement programs from across the state that focus on welcoming families into the local school system, communicating effectively, supporting students and promoting collaboration, according to a press release from the Florida Department of Education.

Police: Tattoo artist contracted to do job robbed by client and cohorts

A DeBary tattoo artist contracted to do a job at an apartment in DeLand was robbed by his client and his cohorts, police said.Marc Phillips, 28, ran from the apartment at 727 W. New York Ave. about 12:50 a.m. Sunday and showed up at a resident's front door covered in shaving cream, DeLand police said.Police did not immediately know why Phillips was covered in shaving cream, said Sgt.

Flagler Sheriff's Office expansion projects on time despite glitches

PALM COAST - The revamped Flagler County Sheriff's Office Operations Center will be completed by the end of August and county officials said construction crews should also reach the midway point next month in their mission to build a new county jail.Flagler County engineer Faith Alkhatib, who is overseeing both multimillion-dollar projects, estimated that the new operations center is three-quarters of the way done, while the jail is at least 30 percent completed.

Hosseini switches ownership of ICI Homes HQ building

DAYTONA BEACH - Mori Hosseini, CEO of Intervest Construction Inc., also known as ICI Homes, has transferred ownership of his company's headquarters building to a new business entity that he also owns.The building at 2379 Beville Road in Daytona Beach was recently sold to Intervest Construction Industries LLC for more than $3.3 million, according to Volusia County property records.
