Accident closes Route 25 in Newtown

NEWTOWN - Emergency officials said Route 25 may be closed until Saturday morning near Middle Gate Elementary School after a car crashed into a utility pole Friday.

Police officials said that while the injuries from the accident weren’t serious, the pole was broken in half and brought multiple wires down across the roadway that could take into the morning hours on Saturday to fix.

The accident on the heavily traveled road occurred around noon Friday when a Lexus traveling southbound in the right lane was attempting to pass a dump truck in the left lane.

 

Redding police investigate credit card theft

REDDING - Local police are asking for the public’s help in locating the suspect in a recent credit card theft.

Police said the card was stolen on Aug. 17 and has been used at several retailers in the Norwalk and Stamford areas.

The suspects are described as two Caucasian women with an infant and young African American girl. Anyone with information is being asked to call the police department at 203-938-3400.

Washington pot dad gets probation

WASHINGTON — A 59-year-old man who grew marijuana for 16 years before his daughter called police to their Blackville Road home last summer has been given probation. Jon Lynch had 18.7 pounds of pot and 23 guns in his home when police fielded a 911 call from his teenage daughter last July, police said. He was charged with two felony drug counts and failing to safely store a gun, but was only found guilty last month of risk of injury to a child and sale of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to five years probation and a suspended five-year jail term on Aug. 18.

 

New Milford business painted with racial slurs

DANBURY - A local business owner who recently moved his family to Connecticut for a better life was shocked Wednesday morning to find racial slurs painted across the restaurant he recently opened on Kent Road.

David Thompson, who opened the Thompson’s Fine American Comfort Food about two months ago with his wife Senka, said he police called him Wednesday morning to inform him that racial slurs and a swastika had been spray painted across the front of the restaurant.

“I’m really fearful for my wife and children, that’s my main concern right now,” said Thompson, who moved his family

 

Police: Bethel man choked, hit second man in road rage incident

DANBURY—A Bethel man was charged Friday night for choking a man who he said cut him off on Main Street, police said.

Bruno Bastos, 29, was driving on Main Street when he said another car cut him off, according to police reports. Bastos then followed the car until the driver pulled over near Park Place.

Officers arrived around 6:30 p.m. to find that during an argument between the drivers, Bastos hit and attempted to choke the other man.

 

Public comment period open for fishing regulations

Residents will have a chance to comment on the proposed changes to the inland sport fishing regulations until 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

The proposed changes would establish trout and salmon stamps, as well as examine regulations concerning methods, gear types, fishing seasons for several bodies of water, as well as harvest regulations for common carp, catfish and bullheads. It would also look at Wild Trout Management Areas, Atlantic Salmon “Broodstock Areas,” Trout Parks and Trophy Carp Waters.

 

Danbury man faces drug possession, dealing charges

DANBURY—A Danbury man was arrested on drug charges Friday after police received complaints that he was selling drugs around the city.

Officers began investigating Elbion “Mark” Barnes, 27, two weeks ago after they received complaints that he might be selling illegal drugs from various locations in the Danbury area.

 

Newtown agrees to inspection of Sandy Hook emergency key folders

NEWTOWN — The town and school district have agreed to allow two families who filed a wrongful death lawsuit over the Sandy Hook massacre to inspect emergency folders from classrooms where victims were slain to see if keys to lock the doors are in those folders. “[T]he defendants do not have any objection to an inspection of them pursuant to proper procedures,” Newtown said in a response filed Friday in Superior Court in Danbury.

 

Danbury man gets drug charges after crashing car, visiting headquarters to report car stolen

After his arrest on breach of peace charges, police found 4.2 grams of crack cocaine and more than $1,000 in twenty-dollar bills in his pocket, according to court documents.

Ward was charged Aug. 2 with interfering with an officer, second-degree breach of peace and two drug charges including felony possession with intent to sell.

 

After fleeing police, 1 dead in Merritt Parkway crash

State Police Trooper Kelly Grant said the vehicle “was reported to have been involved in an evading crash in Stratford earlier in night after striking the personal vehicle of an off-duty trooper.”

The crash scene has been cleared and will not affect the morning commute.
