New Milford sewer plant struggles with debt

When New Milford’s $22 million sewer plant expansion opened to great fanfare in 2012, officials confidently predicted they could pay off bonds sold to finance the project by signing up new customers for its web of sewer lines.

Gronbach has urged the commission to focus on attracting new commercial hookups to existing sewer lines to help raise revenue.

For other properties, including commercial customers, the fee varies by square footage, from $2,500 for properties under 5,000 square feet to $50,000 for those over 75,000 square feet.

Esty takes recent Newtown acquaintance to Washington prayer breakfast

NEWTOWN - Eman Beshtawii, the director of community services and outreach programs at the Al Hedaya Islamic Center in Newtown, was the guest of U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty at the 64th annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.

Chairman: Kent school board won’t discuss arming teachers

Cortese, in a statement, condemned the selectmen’s 2-1 vote this week to recommend the “FASTER Saves Lives” program, which took place before the program was discussed with school district officials.

Selectmen Jeffrey Parkin, who proposed adoption of the program, said Friday the selectmen did not intend to pre-empt the school board’s authority, but only to suggest it as a measure that warrants consideration.

Crash kills Danbury man

Joseph E. Neumuller, 26, of High Rise Road, was traveling west about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday when he drove off the right side of the roadway and hit a cluster of trees, according to a news release.

The Danbury Police Department’s traffic division is asking anyone with information about the crash to call Officer Lance Brevard at 203-797-2156.

 

Brookfield police nab bank robbery suspect

BROOKFIELD — Police have arrested two people in connection with a bank robbery Monday on Federal Road.

After interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video from Union Savings Bank, investigators identified a suspicious car seen in the area during the robbery.

The robbery took place late Monday afternoon when a man carrying a black backpack and wearing a black knit cap and black sunglasses came into the bank and demanded money from the teller drawers, police said.

 

Car thieves target downtown Bethel

BETHEL — Police are warning residents that thieves have been targeting unlocked cars in the downtown area. The Bethel Police Department is investigating a series of recent incidents in which cars were stolen, broken into or stolen and later returned.

 

Cops: Bethel woman harassed, hit driver

The victim told police she was sitting at the traffic light at Beaver Brook Road and Starr Road when 45-year-old Traci Jones started banging on her car window, according to the report.

According to the report, Jones was upset that the victim talked to her husband.

 

Body found in vehicle engulfed in flames

Police said after the fire was extinguished, officers found the dead operator inside the charred vehicle.

Capt. Ronald Smith said “a preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle, which was traveling northbound on Whitney Avenue, crossed the center line, left the roadway and struck a building sign.”

 

Police: Danbury caregiver assaulted deaf client

A Danbury caregiver faces three misdemeanor charges after police said he struck and injured a 68-year-old client who was deaf and unable to speak.

Michael Gawu, 61 of South Street, was arrested and charged Friday with intentional cruelty to a person, disorderly conduct and third degree assault, police said.

Police said the victim wrote down the complaint after a family member notified Danbury police. Police said the victim’s injuries were visible.

The state’s Adult Protective Services unit assisted in the arrest, Danbury police said.

 

Esty’s liquid nicotine safety packaging bill is now law

“This new law will protect our children from unnecessary poisonings by requiring liquid nicotine containers to have child-proof packaging,” Esty said in a prepared statement.

“Cases of accidental poisonings have skyrocketed in recent years, sending children across Connecticut and nationwide to emergency rooms with serious health consequences,” Blumenthal said in a statement.
