Real Wheels: One prized possession

ELIDA — Dennis Shaw, of Elida, brought his 1966 Chevy Corvette Stingray Coupe to the Westgate Charity Car Show in June.
Shaw has owned this beauty for 47 years. He has taken it to various car shows throughout our area, as well as the Corvette Car Show in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Shaw’s car won Best of Show in 2016 at the Bowling Green, Kentucky, show.
“It was judged by the people that were building them,” said Shaw.

New classics like Datsuns and DeLoreans attact millennials

DETROIT — Millennials are getting into car collecting, and they’re changing the hobby and the idea of what vehicles are worth owning and preserving.
This year, for the first time, millennials are responsible for more collectible car activity than the pre-baby-boom generation, according to Hagerty Insurance, the largest insurer of collectible cars. Roughly speaking, millennials are the generation born between 1977 and 1995.

Winning pitcher also homers as Pirates top Reds

CINCINNATI — On his 10th try, Gerrit Cole finally beat the Cincinnati Reds. And he pretty much had to do it by himself.
Cole ended his career-long futility against the Reds by hitting a homer , pitching seven innings and leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 1-0 victory Saturday night.
“That’s the old thing: When something like this happens, you joking say he Little Leagued them,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “He shut ‘em out and hit a homer. That’s impressive.”

Indians shut out Royals

CLEVELAND — Mike Clevinger pitched six sharp innings and rookie Bradley Zimmer made a sensational catch in center field before ending Jason Hammel’s bid for a perfect game, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 4-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.
Roberto Perez hit a two-run homer off Hammel (6-10), and Edwin Encarnacion and Carlos Santana also connected as the defending AL champions moved a season-high 16 games over .500 at 72-56.

 

Jackson leads Celina to girls team crown at cross country invitational

CELINA — For Celina senior Lauren Jackson, being able to compete this cross-country season at a high level, is one of her goals.
Last fall, Jackson participated in just one 5,000-meter cross country race, because of an injury.
