Gospel music icons appearing at Civic Center

LIMA — Larry Gatlin and The Blackwood Brothers will be appearing at the Civic Center Thursday night.
According to Ron Blackwood, formerly of The Blackwood Brothers, Larry Gatlin listened to The Blackwood Brothers when he was a youngster.
“Larry Gatlin has told me many times in Texas when he was a young boy his mom and dad would take him to hear The Blackwood Brothers,” said Blackwood.

 

Labor Day Parade filling the streets in Lima

LIMA — For most people, Labor Day represents a day off work, or at least a recognition of the work that they do. The West Central Ohio-Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO is in charge of Lima’s parade. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday with the theme, “Organized Labor — Giving Workers a Voice, Giving Families A Better Life.”
“We try not to emphasize organized labor, but all working men and women,” said Jeff Kranz, president of The West Central Ohio-Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO.

 

Max’s Trader Days at fairgrounds this weekend

LIMA — The Allen County Fairgrounds have been taken over by Max’s Trader Days and Water Dog Races this weekend.
“We open at 7 a.m. Friday and never close,” said Max McCluer, owner. “We are open 24 hours a day.”
This event encompasses the entire fairgrounds. Because of that, golf carts are available to rent or you can bring your own.

 

Governors urge keeping US health law’s individual mandate

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A bipartisan governor duo is urging Congress to retain the federal health care law’s unpopular individual mandate while seeking to stabilize individual insurance markets as lawmakers work on a long-term replacement.
The recommendation is part of a compromise plan that’s designed to be palatable to both parties. It was endorsed by six other governors.

 

Perry Township’s Roschman Avenue to be reconstructed

LIMA — Traffic to Motel 6, Bob Evans, Panera Bread and other businesses along Roschman Avenue will soon get a lot smoother, according to the Allen County Engineer’s Office.
Allen County Commissioners approved a contract with Lima-based Degen Excavating Co. Inc. for over $192,000 to reconstruct 725 feet of the roadway. The road gives access to many businesses between Sam’s Club and Harding Highway. The eight-week project is the responsibility of Perry Township, with the Allen County Engineer’s Office overseeing the contract bidding process.

 

Allen County Sanitary Engineer updates regulations and design specs

LIMA — Designers and home builders could have an easier time ensuring their sanitary sewer drainage designs are acceptable after updates to the Allen County Sanitary Engineer’s Office rules, regulations and procedures.
Approved by county commissioners Thursday, the updated and reformatted rules will separate the department rules and regulations into a separate document from the general specifications and design criteria, with updated renderings and material requirements included.

Rescuers seek anyone — alive or dead — left in floodwaters

HOUSTON (AP) — Rescuers began a block-by-block search of tens of thousands of Houston homes Thursday, pounding on doors and shouting as they looked for anyone — alive or dead — who might have been left behind in Harvey’s fetid floodwaters, which have now damaged more than 87,000 homes and destroyed nearly 7,000 statewide.

Representative Keith Faber to speak at Allen County Republican Luncheon
