Chatham Commission begins implementing changes under new joint police merger agreement

It’s been about a month since officials in Chatham County and the city of Savannah jointly approved a new agreement for the operations of the Savannah-Chatham police department. Now the two governments are starting to put the document to use.
As required under the agreement, both bodies this week signed off on a contract with Ohio-based Berkshire Advisors for consulting services meant to determine the true costs of running the department for each entity moving forward.

Chatham County Health Department lifts Polk Street beach advisory

The Chatham County Health Department has lifted the advisory for Polk Street Beach on Tybee Island.
The advisory was issued on March 30 after routine water quality tests showed a high level of enterococci bacteria which increase the risk of gastrointestinal illness in swimmers.
Subsequent samples on this northern most part of Tybee Island, at the mouth of the Savannah River from the end of the beach to the jetty, show that bacteria levels are now within acceptable limits.
