It’s been about a month since officials in Chatham County and the city of Savannah jointly approved a new agreement for the operations of the Savannah-Chatham police department. Now the two governments are starting to put the document to use. As required under the agreement, both bodies this week signed off on a contract with Ohio-based Berkshire Advisors for consulting services meant to determine the true costs of running the department for each entity moving forward. The $109,500 contract will be divided equally between the two and is expected to determine how much time officers are spending in each jurisdiction. “We will begin immediate work to look at data mining,” County Manager Lee Smith said. Meanwhile, the county commission — in the first of what will be several steps to overhaul the local animal control office — voted Friday to create two new positions for the department. The vote creates the post of animal control supervisor, along with an administrative assistant position, in advance of the July 1 transition outlined in the merger agreement. Smith said the new supervisor will answer to him and will be responsible for a staff of about 14 civilian employees.
