Savannah-Chatham police warn residents of ransom phone scams

Police say they’ve received a number of alerts lately about scammers calling residents and demanding ransoms. Now, they’re asking that residents who receive suspicious phone calls get in touch with authorities rather than become victims of a financial crime.
The first scam involves callers claiming to hold a victim’s sibling hostage and demanding a ransom in exchange for their freedom. In the second scam, a caller claims a victim’s sibling was at-fault in a fatal wreck and in exchange for a fee, police action can be avoided.

Savannah-Chatham police look for man suspected in assault, home invasion

Savannah-Chatham police are asking the public to help them find a man wanted in connection with a home invasion, burglary and aggravated assault on March 2.
The incident happened in the 1200 block of McCarthy Avenue, said Sonny Cohrs, police spokesman.
Alfred Craig Frazier, 27, the suspect in the crimes, is known to frequent the Clearview and Frazier Homes areas.

Police search for suspect after armed robbery in Savannah's Live Oak neighborhood

Police say they’re searching for a man suspected of an armed robbery in Savannah’s Live Oak neighborhood early Friday morning.
Just after midnight, the man walked up to a woman in the 1400 block of East 40th Street and demanded money, said Sonny Cohrs, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman. The victim was able to fight off the suspect, who ran away. She was treated for minor injuries at Memorial University Medical Center.

Third Savannah candidate joins race to replace state Rep. Bob Bryant

ATLANTA – It became a three-way race to succeed Rep. Bob Bryant on Friday when Alicia Blakely qualified for the special election before candidate sign-ups closed at noon.
Blakely, a longshorewoman identifying as a Democrat, is coming fresh off of a try for a Savannah City Council’s at-large post. She made it to the runoff last November but lost to Brian Foster.
She joins businessman Josey Sheppard and Carl Gilliard, CEO of Feed the Hungry. All list themselves as Democrats even though the March 29 special election is nonpartisan.

 

Savannah internship's exclusion of "at-risk" youth, funding questioned

Some Savannah aldermen and community members are questioning the priorities and funding of a summer youth internship program being spearheaded by Mayor Eddie DeLoach and Mayor Pro-Tem Carol Bell.
Aldermen Van Johnson, Estella Shabazz and Tony Thomas voiced their concerns about the eligibility requirements for the Summer 500 jobs program near the end of the meeting Thursday, after two residents called for the elimination of pre-requisites that disqualify applicants who fail a drug test or have a felony record.
