That desire for safety is what prompted gun novice Sara Cotter to attend Global Tactical Training Group’s First Shots education class Saturday morning near Richmond Hill.“I’ve had my gun for about a year, and I had only fired it once,” Cotter said. “My husband is a police officer ... Texas police: 1 injured in refinery-generator explosion

PASADENA, Texas (AP) — One person was injured when a generator inside a refinery near Houston exploded, authorities said Saturday.Officials at the Pasadena Refining System Inc. facility are doing a head count, Pasadena police spokesman Vance Mitchell said, and he believes the injured person was taken to a nearby hospital. Mitchell did not know the extent of the person's injuries.

 

Man who fatally punched toddler gets 30-year prison sentence

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man who fatally punched his girlfriend's toddler daughter when the child wouldn't let him comb her hair after a bath has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.Hudson County prosecutors say Reinaldo Rodriguez hit the 2-year-old so hard that he lacerated her liver. He pleaded guilty to murder in January.The Jersey Journal (bit.ly/1QVcksu) reports the 27-year-old Bayonne man was babysitting the child at his girlfriend's Jersey City home in May 2014. Authorities went there after a 911 caller reported the child was barely breathing.
