Some Savannah aldermen and community members are questioning the priorities and funding of a summer youth internship program being spearheaded by Mayor Eddie DeLoach and Mayor Pro-Tem Carol Bell. Aldermen Van Johnson, Estella Shabazz and Tony Thomas voiced their concerns about the eligibility requirements for the Summer 500 jobs program near the end of the meeting Thursday, after two residents called for the elimination of pre-requisites that disqualify applicants who fail a drug test or have a felony record. Alicia Blakely, who lost to Brian Foster in a run for the alderman at-large seat, said that at-risk youth should be part of the nine-week program that is expected to pair 500 rising seniors from both public and private schools with area businesses.
