Driver who killed Kingsport businessman denied parole

BLOUNTVILLE — The drunk driver who fatally struck a prominent Kingsport businessman in 2014 will spend at least two more years in prison.
James Hamm’s request for parole has been denied, according to Sullivan County District Attorney General Barry Staubus. Last week Hamm went before the parole board, where Debbie Locke, the widow of Mike Locke, urged that Hamm remain behind bars.
Mike Locke founded the popular Hot Dog Hut in Kingsport and briefly served as state representative for the 2nd House District.

ROGERSVILLE - Lauveda Agnes Goodson, age 87 of Rogersville, passed away, Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Greeneville Community Hospital East.
Visitation hours will be 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville.
Funeral service will be conducted 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 14, 2019 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating. Graveside service will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, August 15, 2019 at Butchers Valley Cemetery.

 

Sheila Charleen Robinette

Sheila Robinette, born on February 22, 1949, and born again on January 15, 1973, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 12, 2019. 
The family will receive friends from 4-7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at Tabernacle Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Pastor Cecil Sturgill officiating.
The graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday at Oak Hill Memorial Park.  Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Margaret Faye Hall

CHURCH HILL - Margaret Faye Hall, 79 of Church Hill, went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 12, 2019 at Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born in Castlewood, VA she had lived in Kingsport for most of her life where she worked in the local school system for over 30 years. Margaret was a member of Vision Missionary Baptist Church in Church Hill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard Hall, Sr. and her parents, Britton and Mae Rose.

Lana Gilley

Lana Gilley, 75, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was a loving mother, "nana" and friend who will always be cherished. She attended Boones Creek High School and was a CNA for home health. Lana will be fondly remembered for her love of sewing and working in her flower garden.
Ms. Gilley was preceded in death by her parents Woodrow Gilley and Margaret Murray.
She is the loving mother of Angela Slagle and husband Chris and Tommie Loudy and husband Eddie.

 

Entertainment lineup, parade route announced for TriPride Festival

KINGSPORT — The entertainment lineup of local, regional and nationally recognized entertainers for this year’s TriPride Festival includes headliners Eureka O’Hara and the band Porch 40.
TriPrideTN announced the lineup on Tuesday for what will be the region’s second annual TriPride Parade and Festival. The event, held in Johnson City last year, will come to downtown Kingsport on Saturday, Sept. 7.
“Our goal was to select performers who would entertain everyone in attendance, from younger folks to adults of all ages,” said TriPrideTN board member Rob Batot.

 

Truman Wayne Tilson

KINGSPORT - Truman Wayne Tilson, 85, of Kingsport, passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2019, at his residence.
He was born September 13, 1933, in Saint Joseph, Missouri to the late Sardis and Margaret Hurley Tilson.
Wayne was a plain and simple man who loved his wife dearly. His hobbies included playing golf, watching football and basketball games and playing cards.
He retired from American Bridge Company as an iron worker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, Rusty Tilson and Rodney Tilson.

 

Joyce Stone

SURGOINSVILLE - Joyce Stone, 81, of Surgoinsville, TN, went to be with the Lord Friday, August 9, 2018 at her residence after a long illness.
She was born in Sheboygan, WI, was a former resident of Colorado, long time resident of California and had lived in Surgoinsville since 2007.
Mrs. Stone, attended First Baptist Church, Surgoinsville. She enjoyed singing, painting and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Mrs. Stone was preceded in death by her parents. Arthur and Evangeline Jensen; brother, Richard Jensen and son in law, Len Johnson.

 

Volunteer to host Hawkins Kickoff Classic on Friday

CHURCH HILL — The Hawkins County Kickoff Classic will be held Friday, starting at 6:30 p.m., at Volunteer.
The event includes scrimmages between the varsity and junior varsity football teams of Cherokee and Grainger (first and second quarters) and Volunteer and Trinity (third and fourth quarters). The night also features performances by the Cherokee, Grainger, Volunteer and Trinity cheerleaders as well as halftime competitions for fastest skill, fastest lineman over 250 pounds, farthest throw, farthest punt and farthest field goal.
