Teen arrested for threats against Methuen High School

A 16-year-old Methuen boy is under arrest, accused of making “disturbing remarks” to his classmates about bullets, death and a mass shooting at Methuen High.Methuen Mayor James Jajuga and Police Chief Joseph Solomon said the youth was arrested at the school yesterday afternoon “without incident,” according to a joint statement.

 

Winter storm warning issued ahead of nor’easter

A winter storm warning was posted this morning by the National Weather Service for the fourth nor’easter expected to ravage the state this month.The forecast, once again, is dire for the Boston area, South Shore and points west as far as Springfield.The warning takes effect for most of the state tomorrow at 8 a.m. and will remain in force until at least 8 a.m. Thursday, as 10 to 14 inches of snow is likely to top off what remains from last week’s blizzard.The weather service said travel “will be very difficult to impossible” during the storm.

 

Boston cops help deliver baby just in time for spring

While the advent of spring slept in late this morning, a couple of Boston police officers out on patrol at 4:30 a.m. in Dorchester were already bringing new life into the world.Boston Police Department spokesman Officer Stephen McNulty said officers conducting an investigation near Adams and King streets were flagged down by a man who told them his wife was going into labor in a nearby parked car.

 

Dismissal sought for 11K cases tied to drug lab scandal

BOSTON — Defense attorneys and civil libertarians have asked the highest court in Massachusetts to throw out another 11,000 drug cases potentially tainted by a rogue chemist at a state drug lab.The motion filed last week by the Committee for Public Counsel Services and the American Civil Liberties Union argues the court should vacate all cases involving drug samples tested at the Amherst lab during Sonja Farak's eight-year tenure.

 

Man gets up to 10 years for fatal parking garage stabbing

SPRINGFIELD — A Massachusetts man who stabbed another man to death in a parking garage during a dispute over vandalism to a car has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.The Republican newspaper reports that 30-year-old Anthony Casiano was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the November 2016 death of Benjamin Lariviere in Springfield.Casiano had faced a murder charge but pleaded to the lesser offense under a plea deal that upset the victim's father, who said the sentence was far too lenient.

 

Police: Cab driver gets trapped under vehicle, run over

FALMOUTH  — Police say a Massachusetts cab driver got trapped under his vehicle and then run over by a pickup truck.Authorities say 80-year-old James Sawyer stopped in Falmouth around 6 a.m. Monday to check a pickup address. He got out of his cab, only to watch it roll away because he accidentally left it in reverse.Police say Sawyer tried to stop the cab and became trapped underneath with his legs sticking out into the road. A passing pickup truck then ran over his legs.Sawyer has been hospitalized with injuries that are not life-threatening.

 

Faulty fuel pump blamed for ferry stranded for 5 hours

TISBURY, Mass. — Officials say a faulty fuel pump is to blame for a ferry losing power off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, stranding 72 passengers for five hours.The Cape Cod Times reports the ferry's fuel oil transfer pump was not generating enough pressure to transfer oil properly. The issue caused the ferry to lose power about 15 minutes into a trip from Vineyard Haven to Woods Hole on Saturday evening.Steamship Authority General Manager Robert Davis says the ferry was cleared to return to service Monday morning.

 

Feds say red hake stock is overfished

BOSTON — Federal fishing regulators say a species of food fish caught by U.S. fishermen in the Atlantic Ocean has become overfished.The National Marine Fisheries Service says red hake have become overfished in its southern Georges Bank and mid-Atlantic stocks. The service has informed the New England Fishery Management Council that it needs to craft a plan to end the overfishing and rebuild the stock.

 

Body found on turnpike identified as H.S. student

The body of a high school student was found yesterday morning on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Grafton, according to the Worcester District Attorney’s Office.The student was identified as Alexandra Valoras, a junior at the Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Upton, a school official said in a statement yesterday.
