College football player dies during spring break in Mexico

AMHERST, Mass. — An Amherst College student who played on the school's football team has died during spring break in Mexico City.Officials at the Massachusetts college said in a statement that senior economics major Andrew Dorogi died Friday. The cause was not provided.Dorogi played tight end and scored a touchdown in the Division III squad's season opener last fall.The school's website says he was from Cleveland and attended the University School in Hunting Valley, Ohio.

A 13-year-old patient at Massachusetts Eye and Ear with hereditary vision loss is the first-ever recipient of a gene therapy that could eventually save him from blindness."This is a real coming-of-age moment for gene therapy," said Dr. Jason Comander, who performed the surgery. "It means a lot to the field."Jack Hogan and his parents traveled from New Jersey over the weekend to have the procedure done yesterday -- the first FDA-approved gene therapy ever given to a patient for any inherited disease.

 

Man sentenced to 3 years for shooting, wounding teen

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to three years in prison for shooting and wounding a 15-year-old boy.The Springfield Republican reports that 21-year-old Julien Rivera pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges including assault and battery with a firearm as part of a deal with prosecutors.Investigators say Rivera shot at the boy four times in Springfield last June. The boy was hit in the hand.Prosecutors and defense attorneys say the motivation for the shooting is unclear.

Transit cops: Boston man arrested for robbing dead man’s pockets

A Boston man accused of robbing a 52-year-old man who later died at the MBTA’s Downtown Crossing station early this morning will face a judge, transit police say.Anthony Stimson, 30, will be arraigned on a larceny charge after allegedly rummaging through the man’s pockets and stealing items, including his prescription medication.

 

Woman shot in Springfield, 3 people arrested

SPRINGFIELD  — Police in Massachusetts say a woman has been taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound and three people are under arrest.Springfield police spokesman Ryan Walsh says the shooting was reported just before 8 p.m. Tuesday.The woman was taken to Baystate Medical Center with injuries that are not considered life threatening.State police say a helicopter aided in the search for the suspects.No names were released and police did not immediately say what led to the shooting or what charges the suspects face.

 

State receives $11.5 million for conservation, recreation

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The U.S. Department of the Interior has announced Massachusetts will receive $11.5 million for conservation and outdoor recreation projects.WWLP-TV reports the funding was announced Tuesday in the department's annual list of apportionments of Wildlife Restoration Program funds. The state is receiving $3.5 million in Sport Fish Restoration funds and $7.9 million in Wildlife Restoration funds.The money comes from the $1.1 billion generated from taxes applied to hunting, shooting, boating and angling industries.___

 

Florida school shooting survivors speak at Harvard

BOSTON — Students who survived last month's shooting at a Florida high school that left 17 people dead have participated in a panel discussion at Harvard about the social movement they've started calling in part for tougher restrictions on guns.The event Tuesday evening at Harvard Kennedy School's Institute of Politics featured six students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.The students have become vocal advocates for stricter gun laws.

 

Table Talk extends Pi Day for Worcester students

WORCESTER, Mass. — Is everyday pie day? Pi Day celebrations postponed by the state's several nor'easters are back on for students and pie company customers who missed out during a snow cancellation.Table Talk Pies is extending its Pi Day festivities by rescheduling its visit to the Canterbury Street School to this Wednesday.The Worcester Telegram reports Table Talk president and owner Harry Kokkinis will visit the school to hand out 4-inch snack pies.

 

Driver pleads not guilty in crash that killed 6-year-old boy

WESTWOOD  — Police say a woman told investigators that she accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake in a crash that killed a 6-year-old boy and injured his father in Massachusetts.Anne Marie McInnis, of Westwood, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to charges including motor vehicle homicide, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and negligent operation.Court documents show the 20-year-old told detectives that she didn't see Edward "Eddie" Thomson or his father Robert in the November crash. Eddie died from his injuries three days later.
