Power outage left ferry ‘dead in the water’

The Coast Guard and the Steamship Authority are investigating what caused a ferry carrying 78 passengers to lose power shortly after leaving Martha’s Vineyard Saturday night.The ferry’s main engines lost power about 15 minutes into a trip to Woods Hole after leaving Martha’s Vineyard about 8:30 p.m., according to Steamship Authority General Manager Robert Davis.Two Coast Guard vessels were dispatched to the scene and three tugboats brought the ferry back to Vineyard Haven about 2 a.m., Davis said in a statement.

President Trump is due in New Hampshire today to discuss the opioid crisis, and some high school students are hoping to get his ear.Those involved with the “Makin’ It Happen in the 603 Empower Youth Initiative” will be using Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to try to get Trump’s attention as he stops at the Manchester Fire Station and Manchester Community College, where he plans to hold a roundtable discussion on opioids.Makin’ It Happen is focused on trying to combat addiction in the Manchester area.

SPRINGFIELD — A brave father died with his two young children when he rushed back into a burning apartment for them after first getting his pregnant wife and toddler out, while other residents dropped a baby to safety out a window, authorities and witnesses said.“He died for them,” Imam Wissam Abdul Baki of the Islamic Society of Western Massachusetts said of the Somalian father, who died with two of his young children on the second floor of a four-story, 20-unit brick residence at 49 Belmont Ave. in the early morning blaze yesterday.

BOSTON — The Boston Marathon is giving runners who use music as motivation free access to elite competitors' playlists and tips.John Hancock, which sponsors the marathon, says it's teamed up with Spotify to let participants in next month's race listen to champion runners' favorite music.Elite athletes contributing tracks to the project include four-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan, who holds the American women's record on the Boston course; 2014 winner Meb Keflezighi; and Tatyana McFadden, a Paralympics gold medalist and four-time Boston Marathon champion.

 

State trooper accused of being drunk at work placed on leave

DEVENS  — A Massachusetts State Police trooper accused of being drunk at work has been placed on leave.Trooper Jonathan Brown was relieved of duty around 2 a.m. Sunday. He was in the middle of an eight-hour shift, which began at 11 p.m. Saturday and was supposed to go until 7 a.m. Sunday.Authorities say Brown was allegedly intoxicated when he arrived at the Devens barracks, and slurred his speech on the state police radio.Brown has been placed on administrative leave, pending a duty status hearing this week.An investigation is ongoing.
