Safety, not guns, must be the first priority

Today we march to feel safe in our classrooms and in our communities and to demand that our lives are prioritized above access to guns.We will march in solidarity with victims of gun violence throughout the country and we will march in resistance against the gun lobby that forces students to risk their lives while adults remain inactive.We have grown up with the words “active shooter” on our tongue. We practiced armed-intruder drills since elementary school.Today we will say enough. We will raise our voices together and demand action.

 

Firefighter perishes in smoky Harlem blaze

NEW YORK — A New York City firefighter died yesterday after becoming separated from his unit while battling a fierce, smoky blaze that broke out in the cellar of a former Harlem jazz club being used as a film set.The fire started as the crew of “Motherless Brooklyn,” directed by Edward Norton, was nearing the end of its working day at 11 p.m. Thursday. Flames poured from the windows as firefighters stormed the five-story building, dumping water on the blaze to get it under control.

WASHINGTON — Washington is preparing for a massive rally today in support of gun control, one that organizers hope will prove that the country has reached an emotional tipping point on gun violence, with teenagers seizing the initiative and leading the demand for change.The nation’s capital is generally nonchalant about protests, but today’s gathering has prompted more attention and speculation than usual.

 

Police nab one suspect in robbery of Gronk’s home

A 31-year-old Randolph man was arrested and arraigned yesterday for his alleged role in the break-in at Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski’s Foxboro home, and two other suspects are being sought.Police said they executed a search warrant early yesterday morning at the home of Anthony Almeida, who they then arrested.Shayne Denn, 26, of Tewksbury, and 28-year-old Eric Tyrrell of Foxboro are also being sought in connection with the break-in investigation, police said.

 

Marty Walsh ‘glad’ case against aides done

The two City Hall aides now clear of federal charges after a judge dismissed their case this week will soon be back at work even as prosecutors signal their intent to appeal the ruling.“I’m glad the matter is resolved,” Mayor Martin J. Walsh said yesterday. “There was a case, everyone followed, you get a chance to see what evidence was put in place. I’m just grateful this was resolved.”Yesterday afternoon, prosecutors told a judge they intend to appeal the dismissal of the cases against the aides.

9 embroiled staties jump ship

Nine of the 19 active state troopers accused of running a traffic enforcement program as an overtime fraud scheme retired before facing a duty status hearing today.Three of the troopers retired following Tuesday’s announcement by Col. Kerry Gilpin of an agencywide audit and further investigation for criminal liability by Attorney General Maura Healey’s office, state police spokesman David Procopio said in a statement. Another six troopers retired today.

 

State lawmakers reach deal on massive criminal justice bill

House and Senate negotiators reached agreement Friday on a sweeping overhaul of the state's criminal justice system, ending several months of what were described as occasionally contentious discussions.The compromise unveiled by a six-member conference committee calls for a wide range of changes in how Massachusetts deals with crime and punishment issues. The changes would affect everything from bail to sentencing to the use of solitary confinement in prisons.

 

One charged, 2 sought for break-in at Rob Gronkowski's house

A 31-year-old Randolph man has been arrested in connection with a break-in at Rob Gronkowski's house in February and two other suspects are being sought.Police said Anthony Almeida was arraigned today in Wrentham District Court on two counts of breaking and entering in the nighttime and other related charges."Still at large, but being sought in connection with this investigation is Shayne Denn, 26, out of Tewksbury ... (and) Eric Tyrrell, 28, out of Foxboro," police added in a Facebook post.

 

Patriots lend plane to Florida shooting victims to attend 'March For Our Lives' rally

 New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft is helping students and families of victims of the recent shooting at a Florida high school attend a march against gun violence.Patriots spokesman Stacey James confirmed that Kraft provided the team's official plane to fly families of the victims from the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, as well as several other students who were injured in the attack . They will be attending Saturday's "March For Our Lives" rally in Washington, D.C.
