SEEKONK  — Former NBA star Chris Herren is launching a wellness center aimed at helping people prevent and break free of substance abuse.Herren says his new venture, Herren Wellness, will offer life skills coaching, educational workshops, and fitness and nutrition advice.The native of Fall River is setting up the center in Seekonk, Massachusetts, just over the border from Rhode Island.

 

Supreme Court's Breyer to visit for event on hate speech

BOSTON — United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is expected to be in Boston for an event exploring hate speech and the First Amendment.Breyer is scheduled to have a public discussion Thursday with the president of the National Constitution Center, a nonprofit history museum in Philadelphia.It's being held at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, a Boston museum and education group.

 

School lockdown drills scheduled after shooting threats

CHICOPEE, Mass. — A slew of shooting threats in Western Massachusetts are pushing police to work with school officials to ensure safety at schools in Chicopee.Masslive.com reports the Chicopee police department worked with Assistant Superintendent Alvin Morton to conduct drills at the schools.A police spokesman called the drills, which included students and teachers, "absolutely necessary."

Man dies after stabbing attack

BOSTON — A man has died after being stabbed by an unknown assailant.The Boston Police Department responded to a call of a person injured in the area of Cushing Avenue in the neighborhood of Dorchester shortly after 3 a.m.When authorities arrived, they found a man with multiple stab wounds, who later died in an area hospital.Officials are investigating the stabbing, and are looking for tips from the public.

 

Saudi crown prince visits MIT as part of US tour

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A member of a foreign royal family has visited one of the most prestigious universities in the nation.Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia is touring the U.S. and visited the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday to promote an academic energy agreement.The second annual "Innovation to Impact Forum" took place in conjunction with bin Salman's visit, and featured exhibits from by MIT-affiliated companies like robotics group Boston Dynamics, and international businesses like oil company Saudi Aramco.

 

Mosques to hold 'Open Mosque Day'

BOSTON — Mosques across the state are inviting members of the public to visit their houses of worship next month to learn more about the faith and its followers.The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is organizing the "Open Mosque Day" on April 8. More than 20 mosques will be participating, including the Worcester Islamic Center and the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center.

 

Plan to replace bridge closed since 1985 moves forward

NORTHFIELD, Mass. — A western Massachusetts bridge that's been out of commission for more than 30 years could be replaced within the next five years.State Sen. Stanley Rosenberg and a design team this week presented three possible designs for a replacement for Northfield's Schell Memorial Bridge, which spans the Connecticut River and connects the east and west parts of town.The bridge was closed in 1985 because of advanced deterioration.

 

Explosion in Ayer kills 1, injures 3

One man was killed, another worker injured and two firefighters suffered minor injuries after an explosion Friday at a furnace equipment facility in Ayer, officials said.The man who died, identified yesterday as a man in his 50s, and another worker were rushed to the hospital following the explosion at Advanced Vacuum Systems, Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan, state Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey, Ayer police Chief William Murray and Ayer fire Chief Robert Pedrazzi said in a statement.
