Recount shows Hulsey wins re-election in 4th Judicial Circuit race

A recount shows incumbent Judge Mark Hulsey won re-election by defeating challenger Gerald L. Wilkerson, an attorney, in the Fourth Judicial Circuit.
Hulsey, who is under investigation by a state judicial panel, edged out Wilkerson by 0.4 percent or 753 votes to retain the bench in the circuit including Clay, Duval and Nassau counties, according to the Florida Divisions of Elections website Sunday.

Jacksonville Journal: Big winner in Lotto

A 69-year-old St. Augustine man is more than a little better off after accepting his share of the $16 million Florida Lotto jackpot from Aug. 24
Carl Benedict chose to receive his winnings as a one-time, lump-sum payment of $6.05 million, the Lottery recently announced.
Benedict bought his jackpot-winning Lotto ticket from the 125 Jenkins St. Publix in St. Augustine.

Red Cross shelters open in Jacksonville, Lake City

The American Red Cross opened shelters Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville and Lake City for families whose homes are not livable due to damage from Hurricane Hermine.
People unable to stay in their homes because of the Category 1 hurricane can go to Evangel Temple Assembly of God Church, 5755 Ramona Blvd., Jacksonville or Mason City Community Center, 11110 S. U.S. 441, Lake City, according to the Red Cross.

When it comes to finding out how much of a toll Hurricane Hermine took on the Jacksonville area’s tourism industry over the Labor Day weekend, it depends on whom you ask.
Though the First Coast escaped relatively unscathed from the first hurricane to make landfall in Florida in over a decade, the threat of the storm was enough to put a damper on some trips to the area for the holiday.

Public comment period open after environmental draft released on potential drone home base at Mayport

Residents in Northeast Florida have until Oct. 1 to file comments on a draft released Thursday by the U.S. Navy that says there will be no significant environmental impact on the area if Mayport Naval Station becomes the East Coast home base for a drone program.
Mayport is one of three locations under consideration for the basing and maintenance of the MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aircraft System, according to the Navy.
