The fall 2011 TV season is upon us, and that means it's time to welcome back old favorites and discover something new. Paranormal and fantasy shows are hot tickets this year.

Though a competitive mother-daughter duo from Southern California works well together as a team when it comes to pageant competitions, they must also be able to communicate effectively on “It’s Worth What?” (NBC at 8) to win the cash prize.

Broadcasters took a big step toward eliminating free TV shows on the Web after they blocked access to their programming online this month to enforce their demands to be paid. Recent actions by Fox, ABC, NBC and CBS in two separate fee disputes suggest that after a few years of experimenting with free, ad-supported viewing, broadcasters believe they can make more money from cable TV providers if they hold back some programming online.

There is a new ratings king on Thursday. For the first time, the new kid on the Thursday block, CBS' transplant The Big Bang Theory (4.0/13, 12.9 million), ranked as the highest-rated program on the night in 18-49, supplanting perennial winner Grey's Anatomy. The comedy accomplished the feat on its fifth airing on the night, a nice validation of CBS' risky scheduling move.

On a night of big finales on NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX, it was the two-hour "Grey's Anatomy" season-ender that ruled. But once again, ABC's already cancelled "FlashForward" delivered low enough ratings to help CBS split the night.

Switching letters. Kate Snow has a date with Dateline. The ABC News and Good Morning America Weekend co-anchor is leaving ABC for a job with NBC News.

NBC is poised to claim another Sunday primetime ratings victory with its big "Sunday Night Football" matchup between Indianapolis and New England, but ABC held up well as its core shows, including "Desperate Housewives," came in above average.

It’s been rumored for a while now that Hulu intends to launch a subscription service. The NBC/FOX/ABC online video website already has built up an audience with its impressive TV library and alien ad campaigns, but the networks have been looking to turn Hulu into a significant profit generator.
