The 23rd installment in the James Bond film franchise earned $156 million for the weekend; the movie begins rolling out in North America on Nov. 8. James Bond pic Skyfall continues to make history at the international box office, grossing $287 million in its first 10 days of play.

Your new friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has spun himself a $65 million opening weekend and $140 million in his first six days at U.S. theaters. Worldwide, "The Amazing Spider-Man" has climbed to $341.2 million.

The Universal event pic is the first of the recent fairy tale retellings to win at the box office; Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" opens overseas to stellar $35 million from only 15 markets, nearly matching the $39.3 million grossed by "Snow White" from 45 territories.

The superhero saga "The Avengers" is living up to its blockbuster buzz with $178.4 million in overseas ticket sales days before it opens in U.S. theaters.

Summit Entertainment's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn--Part 1 opened with a sharp bite around the globe, grossing $139.5 million domestically and $144 million overseas for a franchise best $283.5 million.

The "Shrek" spinoff "Puss in Boots" landed on all fours, opening with an estimated $34 million to lead the box office. The DreamWorks 3-D animated film, distributed by Paramount Pictures, proved the popular character voiced by Antonio Banderas was a big enough draw outside the "Shrek" franchise... But the largest estimated opening didn't happen in North America. "The Adventures of Tintin," which is being distributed overseas by Sony Pictures and Paramount Pictures, opened in 19 international markets and hauled in $55.8 million.

The good news for Hollywood: summer movie revenues are up worldwide as studios rebounded from a dismally slow start to the year. The bad news: Domestically, revenues rose only a fraction compared to the previous year's, while actual movie attendance dropped for the fourth-straight year.

The re-engineered "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequel "On Stranger Tides" found its smoothest sailing overseas, where it took in a record $256.3 million at the international box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. "On Stranger Tides," the fourth "Pirates" installment, earned $90.1 million domestically.
