Ratings Rat Race: ‘Private Practice’ Down In New Slot; ‘Glee’, ‘Last Man’, ‘NCIS’ Hit Lows

Last night featured two season finales and a time-slot premiere. Fox’s Raising Hope, which has already been renewed for next fall, wrapped its second season with a 1.9/5 in adults 18-49, even with last week’s fast national (up a tenth from the final). Its lead-in, New Girl (2.7/7), was down a tenth from last week, while Glee (2.4/7) was down 11% to a series low.

Sarah Palin helped "Today" maintain its winning streak against "GMA," even with the appearance of its own guest star Katie Couric. NBC's "Today" widened its advantage over ABC runner-up "Good Morning America" by 23,000 viewers Tuesday, compared with the day before, according to the Nielsen Co.

The TV Column: ‘Mad Men’ season five premiere draws 3.5 million viewers

Mad Men Season 5

After 18 months of waiting, an average of 3.5 million people tuned in Sunday to watch “Mad Men’s” fifth-season debut. That’s a series best for the show — and about 600,000 more people than watched the fourth-season debut in July 2010. “Mad Men” had been off the air since October 2010, following the fourth-season finale, as the studio, the network and the creator wrangled over this and that — product placement within the show, adding another ad break, creator’s salary, blah, blah, blah.

Common Sense: NBC Finds a Winner in ‘The Voice’

Having the top show on television presents a rare opportunity for any network, but especially NBC, which has been so far behind for so long... This week “The Voice” emerged as the unlikely winner of its own reality competition. With a 6 rating, it displaced Fox’s long-running “American Idol” as America’s top-rated television series.

TV Ratings: Oscars Posterized NBA All-Stars

The Artist Picks Up Best Picture at the Oscars

Because of the shorten NBA season caused by the lockout, this is the first time the telecast of the NBA All-Star game went head-to-head with the 84th Academy Awards. I thought the basketball game would get crushed, even with Linsanity in attendance - technically, he was only in the Rising Stars Challenge which took place on Friday.

Who’s bright idea was it to go head-to-head with one of the biggest tv events of the year? Couldn’t the NBA have done it the week before or after the Oscars? Maybe TNT, which televised the game, thought it’s good counter-programming.
