Not many people grab 17-foot pythons by the neck for a living. Matthew Kogo welcomes it. Recently, the environmental educator, who moonlights as a professional python hunter for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, pulled a 17-foot, 1-inch, 106-pound invasive Burmese python — one of the largest of the year so far — out of the Everglades. Things got pretty spicy on that dirt road in the middle of the night, and the whole adventure was caught on video by his wife, Michelle, who’s also a professional python hunter. The FWC declined to accommodate an interview with Matthew Kogo, but the video he shared with the South Florida Sun Sentinel, and several clips Kogo posted on Instagram, offer a vivid picture of what it’s like to tangle with an angry 106-pound snake that’s peeing on you while attempting to trip you, wrap around your limbs and wrench your hands off its neck.
