The chief state prosecutor in Orlando, Monique Worrell, lived under the shadow of the headsman’s axe for months. Gov. Ron DeSantis hinted, threatened and joked sarcastically about suspending her from office. He rallied allies to attack her, sent accusatory demands for data to discredit her, trampled clear boundaries meant to keep politics out of criminal justice and twisted the truth to justify his political games. That axe fell Wednesday as the Republican governor immediately suspended the elected Democratic prosecutor, accusing her of neglect of duty and incompetence for a pattern of going far too easy on dangerous criminals. From a distance, Floridians might think DeSantis’ actions were justified, but it was political theater and a power play.
