COVINGTON, Ga. — A 16-year-old boy has been accused of killing a man who gave him and his friends a ride, then dumping his body and driving off in his SUV.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that the teenager shot and killed Enrique Ramirez Trejo of Covington on Saturday night. The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles accused of crimes.

Deputies say Trejo was on his way home when he stopped at a convenience store and offered three males a ride.

DULUTH, Ga. — Police say an armed robbery attempt led to a gun battle between two men, leaving both of them shot to death in Atlanta’s northeastern suburbs.

Gwinnett County police say a man with a gun approached a man and woman and tried to rob them as they left the Time Internet Café near Duluth late Monday night.

Police say the man leaving the café drew his own handgun, and the two began shooting at each other.

ATLANTA — Authorities have increased the reward offered for information on the death of a 19-year-old woman whose body was found naked with multiple gunshot wounds in an Atlanta park last month.

Atlanta City Council member Cleta Winslow said at a news conference Monday that a $10,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for killing Bridget Shiel.

Toxicology results determined a woman’s suspicious death in April was a result of a drug overdose complicated by medical issues.
Police and the Richmond County Coroner’s Office began an investigation into Hannah Newman’s death after her father found her dead at their Oakdale Road home on April 17. Officials initially said her death could connected to several recent fights in which the 22-year-old had been involved.

The man involved in a five-hour police standoff Monday at his Richmond County home is a former Olympic competitor, authorities confirmed Tuesday.
George Washington Kitchens Jr., 33, was taken to the Richmond County jail, facing charges of terroristic threats and acts. He was alone in the home during the Monday standoff and no injuries were reported.
Kitchens was a track star at both Glenn Hills High School and Clemson University. He competed in the 2012 London Olympics in the long jump, but did not win a medal.
 

Georgia fell slightly in an annual ranking of how children and families fare as the state continues to be plagued by a high percentage of children in poverty and parents without a secure job.
But there are some positive signs in education and a drastic drop in teen births that point to a turnaround in child poverty, experts said.

Authorities are looking for a man who tried to walk out of an Augusta Wal-Mart store June 14 with almost $800 in merchandise.
According to a bulletin from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, at 11:10 a.m. a medium build, white man entered the store at 3209 Deans Bridge Road and took $798 in merchandise and tried to leave without paying.
When confronted by an employee, he left the merchandise and drove away in a blue Ford Explorer, Georgia license tag PFR4271. The merchandise was returned to the store.

 
There is a natural gas leak in Baldwin Place subdivision.
 
According to a news release from Columbia County emergency services, the road has been closed from 1550 Baldwin Place to Bob White Trail and the residents within the vicinity of the leak are being evacuated as a precaution since this is a main line.
 
Fire personnel are on scene and gas company repair crews are en route.

 COLUMBUS, Ga. — A new Miss Georgia has been crowned in Columbus.
 Media outlets report that Patricia Ford, Miss Capital City, won the title Saturday. Ford, a Georgia Tech graduate, performed a Ballet En Pointe routine for her talent. Through the years, she has worked to promote and raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.
