Turkey, Russia to discuss grave situation in Syria's Idlib

MUNICH – A Turkish delegation will travel to Russia on Monday to discuss the situation in Syria's Idlib province amid mounting fears of a humanitarian disaster there, Turkey's foreign minister said.

Hundreds of thousands of civilians in Idlib province are scrambling to escape a widening, multi-front offensive by Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces.

Amid coronavirus fears, 2nd wave of flu hits U.S. kids

NEW YORK – A second wave of flu is hitting the U.S., turning this into one of the nastiest seasons for children in a decade.

The number of child deaths and the hospitalization rate for youngsters are the highest seen at this point in any season since the severe flu outbreak of 2009 to 2010, health officials said Friday.

 

Esper says Taliban deal is promising but not without risk

MUNICH – U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Saturday that a truce agreement between the U.S. and the Taliban that could lead to the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan is not without risk but “looks very promising."

Hampton Inn proposal in Huntley comes forward with changes to location, incentives

A proposal for a 93-room Hampton Inn and Suites in Huntley presented to the Village Board last year has come forward with changes to the location and possible incentives.

A conceptual review of the project was conducted by the board in September, but a modified proposal was evaluated during Thursday’s meeting.

The hotel initially was going to be in Regency Square.

A Lundahl Middle School student was selected as one of the winners for a national “Protect Your Eyes” public service announcement contest.

Seventh grader Colleen McSweeney’s PSA was submitted by her seventh grade science teacher, Amanda Stone, as part of a class assignment during extended learning time.

 

Lake County Sheriff's Office to host Citizen Police Academy

The Lake County Sheriff's Office will host a Citizens Police Academy running from April 2 through June 4.

Classes will be held at the sheriff’s office headquarters in Waukegan and sub-station in Libertyville. 

The Citizens Police Academy is open to all Lake County residents aged 18 or older, of good moral character and with no felony convictions.

Those who attend the free course will get an in-depth view of all Sheriff’s Office responsibilities, including Corrections, Highway Pat

 

Alert homeowner rescues man from icy Antioch-area lake

For those involved, what happened last Sunday on snow-covered Lake Catherine near Antioch seemed to unfold in slow motion. Or was it in the blink of an eye?

Time is hard to gauge even days later for the man who fell into icy water trying to rescue his dog and the alert lakeside homeowner who managed to pull him out – cold and a bit confused, but safe.

Woodstock North Math Team trophies are multiplying, to compete in regionals this month

Over the past few years, one of the most difficult geometry calculations for the Woodstock North High School Math team is finding space for all of those Thunder trophies.Since 2018, the WNHS team has won five first-place trophies including three this year alone in Stillman Valley, Rockford and Hononegah. The team will compete in regionals, where it came in second last year, on Feb.

NIU student, alum remembered one year after Henry Pratt Co. shooting

Abby Roemer remembers when Trevor Wehner was first hired as an intern at Henry Pratt Co. because he had warned her he was going to be 10 minutes late to their Northern Illinois University class since he was driving to Aurora to hand in some new-hire paperwork.

“We said ‘Trevor, what are you driving there for? Just email it,’ ” Roemer said.
