Police: Person hospitalized in accident caused by wrong-way driver

TRUMBULL — One person was sent to the hospital after an accident caused by a motorist traveling the wrong direction on the Merritt Parkway, police said.

Connecticut State Police Troop G responded to a two-car accident that resulted in a rollover on the northbound portion of the parkway between Exits 47 and 48 around 8:37 p.m. Friday night.

Police determined that the accident resulted from a driver entering the wrong way on the highway and driving head-on into northbound traffic.

 

Danbury man faces drug charges

DANBURY—A 43-year-old man is facing several drug charges after a weeks-long investigation led police to search his home Thursday. Police said they began investigating Keenan Moore, of Danbury, after complaints that he had been selling drugs from his home on Ashwood Valley and other locations in town. On Thursday, officers surveying Moore said they saw him stopped on Nabby Road in the car listed on a search and seizure warrant for him and his home, police said.

 

Man critically injured in parking lot crash in Stamford

STAMFORD — One man was critically injured and a dozen parked cars were damaged when an elderly woman struck the vehicles Friday morning in the parking lot of a Strawberry Hill apartment complex. A 50-year-old man was trapped under one of the cars and went to Stamford Hospital with what was initially believed to be a broken leg and a minor injury to his head. He was later flown to Westchester County Medical Center in critical condition. The 82-year-old woman driver was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Sgt.

 

Re-election lawn sign stolen from New Milford mayor’s lawn

NEW MILFORD — Mayor David Gronbach wrote on Facebook Friday morning that someone had stolen a re-election lawn sign from his front lawn — two weeks after he asked residents to let lawn signs be.

In a news release and accompanying Facebook post written earlier this month, Gronbach urged residents to “be adults and set a good example.”

“Please don’t trespass on someone else’s property to remove or vandalize a sign,” he wrote.

Gronbach faces Republican Pete Bass in the Nov. 7 election.

 

Suspect sought in Brookfield bank robbery

BROOKFIELD - Police are searching for a suspect wanted in connection to a bank robbery at the Newtown Savings Bank on Federal Road this morning.

Police said the robbery occurred just prior to 9 a.m. this morning and that no weapon was shown by the robber. The individual fled from the scene and authorities have police dogs in the area tracking the suspect.

Police are still actively investigating the scene of the robbery.

Minor gas leak empties Hart Elementary School in Stamford

STAMFORD-Hart Magnet Elementary School was evacuated early Thursday afternoon because of a minor gas leak.

A fire official said that maintenance workers were purging a gas line of water on the roof of the Adams Avenue school, which released a small amount of gas into the building.

As a result the school was evacuated at about 2 p.m. and firefighters arrived to ventilate the area that smelled of gas and make sure the leak was contained.

Danbury residents warned of increased fire hazards

DANBURY - Fire officials are warning residents of a heightened fire danger this afternoon due to dry conditions and increased winds.

Citing an alert from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued an alert that a dry air mass over the region combined with high winds is creating a situation where fire can spread more rapidly.

Wind gusts of up to 20 to 30 miles per hour could increase the spread of an fire that is ignited, the alert noted.

Crews with the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department as recently as last week battled a brush fire near Francis J.

 

Arrest made in fiery Redding crash

REDDING - The driver of a Jeep Liberty that erupted in flames after a crash in April critically injuring several local students was arrested Wednesday on charges including driving under the influence.

Ryan Capozziello, 18, of Fairfield turned himself in to police Wednesday after learning there was a warrant for his arrest stemming from the April 14 crash with charges that also include reckless driving and five counts of second-degree assault - a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

The accident occurred on April 14 at around 6 p.m.

 

Don’t Be Bullied by Fake “Jury Duty Scam”

Connecticut BBB says an Old Scam is Gaining New Traction in Local Communities Connecticut Better Business Bureau is helping police spread the word about a “Jury Duty Scam” being reported by Fairfield police. In variations of this scheme, telephone callers pose as law enforcement officials, members of the U.S. Marshals Service, bailiffs or court clerks.  They tell their would-be victims that they failed to appear for jury duty or answer a court summons, and that there is an active warrant out for their arrest.

 

Pet pig abandoned at Stamford vet hospital

STAMFORD — A sick pet pig was abandoned Tuesday at a veterinary clinic in the South End and authorities are searching for its owners, who they say also kept illegal wild animals.

The two women who brought Emma, a 5-pound pot bellied pig, to Cornell University Veterinary Specialists left to go to their car at 6:45 a.m. and never returned, Animal Control Officer Tilford Cobb said. They gave false names and telephone numbers to the clinic, where the pig has been experiencing seizures and may be euthanized, he said.

“It’s the cutest little pig,” Cobb said.
