City man charged in breaking woman’s arm in domestic assault

STAMFORD - Police held a city man over the weekend, charging him in an assault of his girlfriend and twisting the woman’s arm so hard that it broke.

On Friday at 4:30 p.m., police were called to Pepper Ridge Road on the report of a woman, who had just escaped her boyfriend after being punched several times in the face.

When police medics arrived the left side of the woman’s face was swollen and her left eye was nearly swollen shut. The woman was also wearing a splint on her left arm, a police report of the incident said.

 

Newtown police make arrests in car thefts

NEWTOWN - Police arrested two juveniles Monday who authorities said stole cars from both Newtown and Danbury before running from police.

Police said they received a report from Danbury detectives around 2:30 a.m. on Monday that an Audi that had earlier been stolen from Newtown was involved in a car accident. The occupants of the Audi fled the scene of the accident and stole a Honda Civic that was parked nearby, police said.

Authorities again got a call around 4:30 a.m. from a resident on Sleepy Hollow Road reporting that a suspicious car was stuck in his driveway.

 

Police: Bridgeport man charged after Cottage Street car break-in

DANBURY—A Bridgeport man was charged Friday night after he used a credit card stolen from a car in September, police said.

Luis Cuevas, 35, was arrested around 9 p.m. in connection with a Sept. 26 car break-in on Cottage Street, where a wallet and credit cards were stolen.

 

New Milford Culinary School accepting students

The Community Culinary School of Northwestern Connecticut is recruiting members for its new session, which will start Jan. 8.

Tuition is free for qualifying candidates.

The Culinary School was established in 2007 to provide unemployed and underemployed men and women with the skills they need to find jobs with career paths in the food service industry. It is open to any adult.

Students learn all aspects of a professional kitchen and food safety during the 12-week course, which is taught by Chef Justin Elander.

 

Police identify car used in fatal Brookfield hit-and-run

BROOKFIELD—Police have identified the car that was used in a hit-and-run accident that killed a woman Monday night. The car, which fatally hit a Brookfield woman on Sandy Lake near the intersection with Homestead Lane around 6 p.m., is a grey or silver four-door sedan, police said. Authorities are still looking for who was driving the car at the time of the accident. The car has a turn indicator on the side or side mirror and will likely have damage on the front bumper, hood or windshield, police said.

 

Heroin blamed for three dead in Stamford this week

STAMFORD — City police are warning illegal drug users to be careful after finding three men dead this week in separate incidents of apparent heroin overdoses. Capt. Richard Conklin said the most recent spike of drug-related deaths is being investigated and there appears to be no connection between the men. The recent surge compares to a single day in July when two men and a woman were treated for overdoses in Stamford. One of the men died. “Unfortunately, regionally and nationally, we are seeing terrific problems with opioids, heroin, fentanyl and pain killers.

 

Redding firefighters battling blaze close Route 58

REDDING - Firefighters battling a blaze near a home on Route 58 have shut down the roadway.

Officials said Friday at around 11 a.m. that Route 58 has been closed between Giles Hill Road and Beach Lane while firefighters respond to a structure fire in the area. Firefighters with the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department, including their tanker truck, are providing mutual aid at this time.

Tankers from the Danbury Fire Department were called in for mutual aid as well as crews from the Brookfield fire department.

More information on the nature of the fire was not immediately available.

 

Police find car of missing Danbury woman

DANBURY - The car of a 53-year-old city woman who went missing late last month has been recovered by New York police. Authorities said Thursday that a car belonging to Laelcira DeLima was located abandoned Tuesday afternoon at the Putnam Diner in Patterson, NY. Police did not immediately say if foul play is suspected in her disappearance. DeLima was reported missing by her family members on Oct. 20. Authorities said DeLima left her home around 5 p.m. on Oct. 20 and was never heard from again.

 

Panel explores global entrepreneurship at Ferguson Library

STAMFORD — Experts from government agencies will share resources for doing business internationally during an event marking Global Entrepreneurship Week at the Ferguson Library.

Business leaders will also share their successes in the global arena, as well as presentations by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Connecticut Small Business Development Center, SCORE Fairfield County, state Department of Economic and Community Development and U.S. Department of Commerce.

The event is Monday, Nov. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ferguson Library, Bedford and Broad streets.

 

Brookfield woman killed in hit and run crash

BROOKFIELD - A female pedestrian was struck and killed in a hit and run accident at the intersection of Sandy and Homestead lanes on Monday night.

Police say the victim is an adult resident of Brookfield. The name of the victim is currently being withheld at this time.

The accident happened at approximately 6:10 p.m.
