1 killed, 1 critically injured in Washington Boulevard crash

STAMFORD — A 19-year-old Stamford resident was killed, and another person was seriously injured, when a silver BMW crashed into a tree Wednesday afternoon on Washington Boulevard near Scalzi Park.

Stamford Police Sgt. Andrew Gallagher said the 19-year-old was a passenger in the vehicle when the crash occurred. The other injured party was the driver, he said, who was taken to Stamford Hospital and remains in critical condition.

The identities of both parties are being withheld, Gallagher said, while officers investigate the crash and notify next of kin.

 

Cops: 4 pounds of marijuana found during traffic stop, driver arrested

STAMFORD — Police arrested a Norwalk man Tuesday night after more than four pounds of marijuana was allegedly found in his vehicle during a traffic stop.

Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin said officers observed a vehicle driving at about 10:30 p.m. on Long Ridge Road and noticed the vehicle had no front license plate.

“That piqued their interest,” Conklin said.

The officers pulled up behind the vehicle and ran the rear license plate number, which Conklin said showed the vehicle was unregistered.

 

Cops: Workmen find loaded gun in home basement

STAMFORD — Maintenance workers got a bit of a surprise Monday afternoon while they were replacing a water heater in the basement at 9 Woodland Avenue.

Stamford Police Captain Richard Conklin said when the workers removed the old water heater, they found a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol concealed behind the machine.

“Someone had rigged a coat hanger to make a sort of hook and hang the gun behind the water heater,” Conklin said.

“The gun was fully loaded, with nine bullets in the clip and one in the chamber and the weapon’s safety was off,” he said.

 

Woman charged with passing counterfeit bills

STAMFORD - A Hartford woman was arrested Monday night on a year-old warrant charging her with forgery and larceny.

Stamford Police Sgt. Steve Perrotta said Stacy Merrick, 34, was wanted for using two fake $100 bills when making a purchase at Talbots in the Stamford Town Center mall on Nov. 14, 2016.

After Merrick made the purchase, Perrotta said the store employee realized the bills were fake and police were notified.

 

Woman found on sidewalk arrested on outstanding warrant

STAMFORD - A Danbury woman was arrested early Tuesday morning after Stamford police found her laid out on a sidewalk in the area of Greenwich Avenue and Richmond Hill.

Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said officers were conducting a routine patrol in the area when they noticed the woman, who was later identified as Simone L. Medina, 32, lying face down on the sidewalk and they called EMS.

EMS responded and Medina was taken to Stamford Hospital for treatment. Police did not say what she was treated for.

 

Cops: Pickax handle found in vehicle, driver arrested

STAMFORD - While setting up for a “Click It or Ticket” detail Monday morning on High Ridge Road, officers allegedly observed a vehicle cut off another vehicle without signaling and initiated a traffic stop.

Stamford Police Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said when police asked the driver, who was identified as Sheldon Bigby, 36, of Waterbury, for his identification and vehicle registration, Bigby became belligerent and refused to cooperate.

“He refused to give the officers his identification and he refused to get out of his vehicle,” Shawinsky said.

 

Man reportedly robbed in Cove

STAMFORD — City police are investigating an alleged robbery that occurred just before 11 p.m. Monday in the 100 block of Cove Road.

Stamford Police Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said an intoxicated Hispanic male told police he was robbed by three black males who hit him with a baseball bat and took his cash and wristwatch.

Due to the victim’s level of intoxication, Shawinsky said he was unable to provide descriptions of the assailants.

Police searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects.

Shawinsky said the investigation is ongoing.

‘Handsaw hacker’ convicted of assault, no verdict on home-invasion charge

STAMFORD — A man who nearly sawed the hand off of a New York City businessman was found guilty of first-degree assault on Monday, but jurors were unable to reach a verdict on burglary and home invasion charges, which means that the state has the option of seeking a retrial for those offenses.

Cesar Olivero attacked the man at his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in what appeared to be a jealous fit of rage on June 25, 2015, according to police.

The man who was attacked was out having drinks in White Plains, N.Y. with Olivero’s estranged lover, with whom he has a child.

 

Officer injured during drug arrest Saturday

STAMFORD — Police arrested Ricardo Georges, 27, on Saturday afternoon in the South End and charged him with drug possession and assaulting a police officer, among other charges.

The Narcotics and Organized Crime division received a tip that Georges was selling in that area, and requested help from uniformed officers.

Georges was on a lengthy parole from his last arrest and release, said Capt. Rich Conklin told the Advocate on Monday.

Georges was stopped by police in the area of Ludlow and Cedar streets. As officers padded him down, they felt a bulge in his waist area.

 

Dispute erupts over staffing of Candlewood marine patrol

BROOKFIELD — Candlewood Lake’s senior Marine Patrol staff have filed a vote of no confidence in the lake authority’s chairwoman, claiming she has interfered in staffing decisions concerning patrol officers. All but one of the senior staff members decided after a heated exchange during the Candlewood Lake Authority’s monthly meeting Wednesday to declare no confidence in Chairwoman Phyllis Schaer. The staff contends that Schaer “meddled” in their recommendation against the return of several patrol officers next season.
