Police: Teen with gang ties arrested with gun in Stamford park

STAMFORD — Police say a 17-year-old with gang ties who recently moved here from El Salvador was arrested this week with a gun at Scalzi Park.

Capt. Richard Conklin said members of the Narcotics and Organized Crime squad were alerted to a youth displaying a gun near the park’s tennis courts. Conklin said the teen fled into the woods when officers approached him about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The teen tripped and the gun fell to the ground, Conklin said.

 

Chief Fontneau offers tips on how to keep Stamford homes safe for the holidays

STAMFORD-Police Chief Jon Fontneau has put together tips to keep city residents happy and safe for the holdidays. In this fourth installment the chief discusses what actions residents can take to keep their homes safe from burglars and porch pirates.

1.Always lock your doors and windows, even if you plan to be out for a short amount of time.

2. Leave lights turned on both inside and outside your residence after dark. Criminals do not like bright places.

3. If you plan on being away from home for several days, make arrangements to have someone pick up your mail and newspapers.

 

Man robbed of 3 pair of sneakers in Stamford

STAMFORD-Police are investigating the claims of a Stamford man who reported to police that he was beat up and robbed of three pair of designer sneakers worth $1,000.

Sgt. Chris DiCarlo said police were called out to Summit Ridge Road in North Stamford Sunday night on the report of a 21-year-old man saying he had been robbed.

DiCarlo said the man, who had three pairs Adidas Yeezy Boost sneakers, was looking for a buyer for the shoes on a social media platform.

 

Stamford police find marijuana locked in toolbox

STAMFORD — Police say they found more than seven ounces of marijuana in a locked toolbox during a traffic stop this week.

Sgt. Jennifer Pinto said officer Christopher Festa saw a car run a traffic light on Summer Street about 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Pinto said the driver, Candina Watson, 30, did not have a license.

“Immediately, he smells a very super strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. He gets a backup there and they start questioning Candina and the passenger and they admit to having marijuana behind the passenger seat in the car. It was in the toolbox,” Pinto said.

 

Stamford police: Bridgeport man found with unmarked bags of heroin

STAMFORD — Police say a tip led to the discovery of another batch of unmarked heroin similar to the bags found near the bodies of three people who died of overdoses in the city last month.

Capt. Richard Conklin said officers in the Narcotics and Organized Crime squad were alerted last week to a man in his late 20s who was expected to make a heroin delivery at the McDonald’s on East Main Street.

Conklin said officers conducted surveillance of the parking lot and spotted a man fitting the suspect’s description in a Ford Expedition.

 

Car tips for navigating the holidays from Chief Fontneau

STAMFORD-On this third installment of holiday safety tips, police Chief Jon Fontneau discusses car safety.

1. When parking your car to go shopping, remember where you parked it. Always park in a well lit and well traveled area. Do not park in a remote dark area.

2. When you return to your vehicle, scan the interior of your car to be sure no one is hiding inside. Check to see if you are being followed.

3. Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. You will be ready to unlock the door and will not be delayed fumbling around while looking for your keys.

Martin supports net neutrality

STAMFORD — Mayor David Martin is one of 60 city leaders from across the country who signed a letter last week to the Federal Communications Commission demanding the agency protect net neutrality.

“A free and open Internet forms the backbone of the 21st century economy, and as leaders of local communities we are acutely aware of the threat to education, innovation and economic growth posed by the proposal,” the mayors wrote.

Public invited to meeting about Stamford deer cull

STAMFORD — A Humane Society official will answer questions at a public meeting Tuesday about a controversial deer cull at a North Stamford nature preserve.

Annie Hornish, Connecticut director of the Humane Society of the United States, will talk about whether culling is a safe and humane tool for deer management.

Hornish wrote a letter to the Stamford Land Conservation Trust asking to delay the bow hunt that began last Monday at the 145-acre Altschul Preserve.

Danbury law firm joins movement vs. drug companies on opioids

A Danbury law firm has joined a growing national effort punish the drug industry for its role in the opioid epidemic. Ventura Law is asking town and cities across Fairfield County to join a potential suit against the pharmaceutical companies to recoup the costs of combatting the crisis. “We feel we have a moral obligation to rectify the wrongs and take a stand against the pharmaceutical companies for creating the problem in this way,” said Kelly Fitzpatrick, a partner with Ventura.
